Haven't told Cedric this yet, but I've got my ticket.

Ain't that something? The judge ruled my case a self-defense after almost a year of waiting. If I'm being honest for once, I'm ready to go. I have so much to do outside of here, way better ways to spend my time than fucking off on my top bunk making a shiv out of a toothbrush.

"That guys got to go! I swear, next time he puts his hands on me I'm extending my time here," and I just laugh most of the time he talks. Dude's always going on about something - it's the closest thing to television in here. Cedric's always talking about some weird ZTV special I never saw in four. It's interesting, I'm learning a lot from a guy who's favorite hobby is breaking glass.

I'll miss our talks.

When I'm on the other side, though, that's for sure. "Damn. You two went at it again?" There's this C-floor guy, Antonio, we only cross his shit when they let us out for recess, but our whole sector's hunting him down because of his charge. Don't get me wrong, I'm well with them. Get consent or get shanked, you know?

But you know, I've always got some ulterior motive. I toss the plastic spoon over the table at Cedric's forehead before telling him, "what are you even waiting for anyways? That guy's a dick, half of B would help you do it." I think what I hate about this place most is the food.

When I'm out of here, first thing I'm ordering is some hot wings.

Truthfully, I'm already counting the days.

Cedric meant what he said. He could count on one hand how many people he actually hated. Everyone assumed he was the type of guy with rage issues, but really he was quite tolerant of bullshit. He often sought out bullshit. A savory taste of chaos to loosen the tongue and satisfy the appetite.

But that fucking Antonio from Eight was another story. Dude always had some sly shit to say, always took it too far; it was no wonder he landed himself in here. He clearly couldn't keep his hands to himself, bastard. Cedric was desperately trying to be on his 'best behavior' with Dr. Carter looming around the cell blocks this week. That woman was a new breed of messed up, as terrifying as she was fascinating.

Still, the thought of punching a tooth out of Tonio's mouth made him feel giddy.

He raised an eyebrow at his cellmate. "Are you saying I should kill him?" He spoke quietly, but it was clear the idea didn't disturb him. He had never killed anybody before, never had a reason to. There were a few Peacekeepers he would love to off if he had the chance, but that was a fantasy.

Did Anarchy think this was a cake walk? Maybe it was. Cedric was sure he had what it takes. Blood didn't disgust him. He had seen a few dead guys here and there - death wasn't an odd sight in Twelve - but they never died by his hands. "That's hardcore. You ever killed anyone before?"

You see, my gut reaction is to deny things. Whether I'm being truthfully or not, "well, yea, about Tonio." I check over my shoulder when I say it, something about the D.C. always makes it feel like there's somebody watching me talk. Maybe it's the camera's, I'm not used to it. Facility living, man, I'm just ready to get out, it's messing with my brain at this point.

I'm six-seconds deep into thinking if I've ever killed anyone before I decide I won't lie to his face. It feels like a coin flip every time, maybe I love a dumb risk but when I'm back in Four none of this matters anyways. "I mean, I know how," that's pretty much how careers flirt anyways. I could kill- I can?

That's just a coming of age question in Four, "but hell, you've probably watched enough to figure it out, you know? What I'm getting at is that we could."

Sick, sick curiosity.

"If we wanted to," and that's where I'm stuck. I can answer that for me - I can answer is about three times over. There's one too many people on this floor, Carter's started rations and my appeal's waiting 'til these fucker's get their behavior under control. Every incident Tonio has, I get another week delay.

Does it count as self-defense if I swing first?

Maybe if I'm self-centered enough. I'll think on that. Not that I don't have the free time, really. There's a second there I just play with the mush on my tray, some guy behind me is talking about how the roach he was training died last night.

"Have you?" I lean down to ask Cedric, speaking the words into the table like it'll soften the blow. You've killed someone, right? It's not of the question for Panem.

You know, the more I think about it, this place fucking sucks.

It wasn't an accusation as much as it was an honest curiosity. Cedric wouldn't care if Anarchy was a murderer. They were cooped up, quite literally, inside a concrete maze of scumbags and sinners. Cedric himself was a breaker of windows and laws, formerly consumed by a life of drugs, sex, and endless chaos, until forced to withdraw in Peacekeeper shackles. He had every intention of returning to that life as soon as he was out, but he would enjoy the stay while it lasted. The bits and pieces that didn't hurt, of course.

"True. I do watch the Games, and I've seen every episode of Slaughter Royale and Murder Castle-" he stopped himself quickly, realizing he was ranting about embarrassing shit again. Somehow it was easy to let his guard down around Anarchy. A cellmate's bond, perhaps. Not many people knew Cedric was obsessed with Capitol shows, especially the violent ones. Anarchy was probably sick of hearing it by now.

Also, he was lying. He had seen every episode of Slaughter Royale twice.

"I haven't, but I think I could. It can't be that hard, right?" Here he was discussing murder like it was the weather. Nothing odd about that. "I could use back up though. It was your idea. In case he tries to run away or some shit."

Can't be too careful with rats like Tonio.

So call me a product of the time, I guess? I have to be honest, this isn't how I expected my life to go either. Being 16 in Panem is just rolling with the punches and I don't think I could be more ready. Cedric's a cool guy but when I'm out of here, I'm fuckin' out of here. When I go back home, my parents will be back and nothing that happened here will matter anyways.

There's not a single guy from four here besides me, I won't see these people again.

What's a boy to do when there's no consequences?

Panem's purging every day -- maybe it's because I'm from four, but if you're not predator than you're prey. There's always a top to the food chain and I've never been one to wait around and find out. "It can't be that hard, right?"

This guy thinks hard. "Pfft, yeah," and so that's where my mind starts to wonder I guess. It's two on one because you always want the better odds, right? Cedric's a nut job from what I've heard, and I've heard a lot. "Does he hang around the showers a lot? It's not like we don't already have the shivs," I say, because there's nothing better to talk about.

There's only so much to do in a pit of jackasses. You know what? Call me an opportunist. "Look at him," goddamn Tonio on the west end. I know how to pick a target and that guy's got to go.

All I'm saying is kill him in the showers and the crime scene cleans itself!

Everything led up to that moment.

One conversation in the cafeteria and suddenly Cedric was holding a shiv in his hand. It was a makeshift piece of shit, but its end was sharp enough to cut through skin if he applied enough force. Most people might wonder, how did i end up here? Not Cedric. He didn't dare think about the consequences of his actions or the morality and strangeness behind his decisions. There was a whole muddy trail of questionable choices in his wake, dirtying up his reputation. Unfortunately, it mattered to everybody except him.

To the bathrooms they crept, blending into the shadows like two dumpster raccoons. The best way to eliminate dear Antontio was by surprising him at his most vulnerable. Jump him in the shower, he won't suspect a thing. Cedric had imagined the scenario in his head a hundred times. It had to be swift, quiet, with as much brute force as possible. The shivs were simple and shallow, incapable of creating one deep wound. They had to jab him full of holes until he looked like a sponge.

Somehow that image wasn't at all disturbing.

Footsteps. Cedric stilled, frozen in time, drowning out the sound of his own hammering heart. Exhilarating.

As soon as he spotted Antonio, it was wolves on a lamb.

Let it be known that Cedric would be the first, and the last, to draw blood.
