The Keepers barely even glance over when he's let into the room. Eden's got a name hanging over his head now, something bold and italicized and more powerful than Song could ever be. There's a darkness behind his eyes and a gold band around his thumb.
He's a Le Roux now.
And Eurydice has already put him to the test. The reaping had barely even finished before she'd beckoned him over and told him a name. And Eden, silly little boy, his first thought was that it was for a hit. That's why he was chosen, right? He's here to do the lioness's dirty work, so if she wants him to kill someone and keep it quiet, then he will.
Sure, maybe he'd been a little taken aback when it was the new tribute's name she'd whispered into his ear. But Fray's on his way to die anyways, Eden didn't get a good look at him up on stage, but he knows that much. Eurydice's kid just went through the same thing last year. It's clockwork in a place like this.
But regardless, he's lucky that Eurydice stops him on his way out, pressing something small into his palm and telling him to make a good impression.
Charm was always 11's forte.
Steel, he still has to remind himself, her name is Steel now.
But Eden's not executioner this time. He's peacemaker. Alliance broker.
He looks down at the little lion pendant in his hand, dotted with rubies the size of his fingernail, and feels a little out of his element.
The door to Bastian Fray's room doesn't seem to care as it shuts firmly behind him.
Fray's got his back to the door, stance easy and lax like he's a rookie at all this. Except there's a line to his shoulders, a sort of tenseness that Eden only really sees in himself and his sisters. It makes him hesitate taking a step forward. He can be silent when he wants to, he can walk quietly and kill even quieter, but Fray knows he's here now, the click of the door made sure of that.
Eden makes sure the floorboard creaks when he moves anyways.
It seems courteous.
But then Fray turns around, and Eden stops in the middle of a step.
Because he knows that face - some part of him does.
Some part of him recognizes the set of his jaw and the harshness of his brow and Eden is suddenly not Eden anymore, he's 12 and his knuckles ache and he lost his voice two years ago. He can't place the feeling exactly, it's almost familiarity, but it makes his skin crawl. The longer he makes eye contact with Bastian, the more he wants to run.
He grips the pendant tightly and counts to three in his head, then sets it down woodenly on the table beside them. He's mechanical now, and once he lets go of the calling card he takes a step back, eyeing the exit already.
