Saving the best for last, Cedric thought. That was what he told himself to help him sleep soundly tonight. He knew his home district wasn't all that interesting, and usually the tributes were a snooze fest. He was determined to be a diamond among coal, or at least a shiny piece of glass.
When his moment of fame arrived, he stepped onto the stage with a toothy smile. Normally he didn't have the willpower nor the energy to smile so wide, crinkling the corners of his eyes, but his audience was the Capitol. He had dreamed of visiting this place and living among its people. Even if it was temporary, even if it was for a death games, it was worth it. Everything was temporary(except death), and the joy written in his eyes revealed a blossoming new story waiting to be told.
He approached the interviewer and softened his smile to a usual shit-eating grin. Most people in Twelve didn't know who Wally Wondull was, and why would they? A man who owned a chocolate factory wouldn't think twice about the coal mining district. Most of them could afford bread, let alone candy. Cedric just happened to enjoy the Capitol's cheesy shows and colorful interviews. It was the only color in Twelve he could find.
"Mr. Wondull!" he exclaimed, "I had the pleasure of tasting your chocolate for the first time today." Was it flattery? Yes. Was it also true? Yes. It checks out.
