Work really sucks.

How was he supposed to know which eggs were and weren't theirs? They all look the same to a young brood guardian like himself, Brody's never even cared much for the job. Being in the arena is boring - they've moved them here months ago and he's already knocked himself out twice from flying into the force field. Today's the icing on the shit cake though: he ate the wrong eggs, even worse, he ate mama's brood.

So, he's as good as dead when they find out.

Or sooner, he realizes, as he descends upon a squad of humans. It isn't even intentional -- guardians don't hunt often, lazy ones like himself even less so. Instead, it came from the crash landing right through the outpost itself, dive bombing through the rusty scaffolding and down below, his weight landing on

There's a lot that goes into pretending to be okay. I'm not one for forcing smiles, but the amount of frowns I've stifled is actually impressive. Leaving out the part where I tripped over my own feet and ate shit as I was introducing myself to Aneesa - she kind of giggled when I stuck my hand up from the dirt so I'm counting that as a win anyway. Still, I hope the cameras didn't catch that part.

Just like that we're a rag-tag group of misfits. Sasha's clever and Cecily's all sharp edges; Aneesa's got eyes that have seen too much and I'm the guy who's gonna die just like his boyfriend did the year before. We might not be dripping in gore and adorned in gold but we're still alive. I didn't think I'd be as grateful for that as I am.

But... I keep looking at them when I'm sure their attention is elsewhere and my chest aches. I'm slowly realizing just how much I want them to be okay. Just how much I need them to survive.

That's dangerous, isn't it?

Bandages feel foreign around my knuckles, as adrenaline ebbs and my breaths get steadier I find all those bruises much harder to ignore. That's the thing about getting carried on high tide your whole life, I've got no idea how to swim without the current. I complain they never gave me a chance to stand on my own two feet but it's not like I ever tried to begin with.

So now I'm hot and sweaty and we've been walking so long I stopped feeling my feet twenty minutes ago. Irritability sticks to my skin along with the sheen of dust and grime we've kicked up. "And people do this for fun?!" I pant, slicking back my hair and wincing as I catch on a particularly nasty tangle, "Fuck hiking."

I'm not angry at them, I'm angry that I can't handle even this. There's all these ways I should be better and I'm just not.

Things cool down when the sun sets, like that's any better. I've always been sensitive to the cold. Chad liked to wrap me up in blankets before his games and would run into the stands at half-time with a mug of hot chocolate for good measure. I think I'd usually complain that he forgot whipped cream or something stupid - it's getting harder to remember all the parts of him I didn't like.

Probably because I had to make most of them up.

The chill goes from a gentle nibble to a fanged bite, the kind with teeth that rip and tear. I shift closer to Sasha and grab the hem of her shirt again. "So you don't wander off." And definitely not because I feel just a bit safer here.

"It's a good idea to sleep up high, right?" I manage to mumble through numb lips, head tilted back as I look up at the massive fuck-off watch towers looming above us. "One way up and one way down. Doesn't make for an easy ambush." I don't know if it's actually a good idea or if we're all just tired but we filter up into the outpost anyway.

Aneesa makes little makeshift beds out of shower curtains and paper towels. I definitely scoffed at them before laying down and instantly regretted it. I underestimated just how comfortable plastic can be when you've just had the most traumatizing day of your life. "I was wrong. You're amazing and I love you." The words are slurred because I'm already half asleep by the time my head hits the wonderful makeshift pillow.

Then I wake up and everything is shitty again.

"What is that!" We're supposed to be enjoying breakfast, not getting divebombed by whatever that abomination is. It catches my leg, slashing through my skin like it's made of paper. I try to grab at the wound but my fingertips brush against flayed flesh and I feel the warmth of my own blood trailing down my wrist. "That's... really gross."

Well, there's a gun shoved in my waistband and I've never shot it in my life but how hard can hitting a moving target really be?

"Eat shit you oversized bird!"

She decided she could trust Gavin around the same time he literally stumbled his way through an introduction. She and Cecily had climbed down to greet her partner and his new friend, and she kept her eyes peeled. She didn't know what was happening here, exactly, and she wasn't sure how long it was going to last. Was she with Cecily now? Were they as well, and if so, did that mean they were all together, or did it mean there was no room for her?

She guessed it wouldn't have surprised her if they weren't interested in keeping her around. She wasn't exactly a reliable ally in a place like this. Now, if this was a giant knitting competition, or a race to see who can hyperventilate themselves out of consciousness first during a panic attack, it'd be a different story. But this was the Hunger Games, and the goal was to survive and the price was killing and the loss was dying and Aneesa Warden, even when she had been more, was never enough to do something like that. She was worth little here. She was worth... nothing.

Cecily was the brave one, Gavin the quick thinker, Sasha was sponsorship gold. Aneesa just... existed, standing next to them. She was so tired of only existing.

She caught herself looking at Sasha as they walked. She reminded Aneesa of the popular crowd back in Nine, which she'd fallen away from after the incident. Particularly, she reminded her of Emery, the self-appointed honest friend, which was her way of indirectly admitting that she could be a total and complete bitch sometimes. It was true- Aneesa had always loved her despite it, because she was secretly a whole person, with a lot of hidden depth and human emotion. But Emery did enjoy making things... difficult. Aneesa told herself to withhold judgment until she had reason, but she could see the cleverness in Sasha's eyes and had to wonder what her intentions were. Not to say that hers were the same, but Emery would've definitely surrounded herself with bigger targets than herself to ensure her own survival. She decided extending her decision until she had more information was perfectly reasonable.

That night, maybe to make herself feel more useful, she'd scrounged the rusty buildings they were surrounded by for anything she could find to fashion beds. Ultimately, she came up with two mattresses made of paper towel rolls stacked on top of each other, a hammock made out of a shower curtain, and for herself, a cleverly-folded rug for a cot and the world's thinnest curtain for a blanket.

She didn't sleep, but she tried, and that's what count. She just couldn't, with all the thoughts running in her head. Was it smart to sleep up high in the wild? Yes. But that was exactly why it was not smart to do in a place like this, where nothing was real. They knew how the human mind worked. They knew which traps to set up so that it was only a matter of time until someone walked into them. And if they didn't on their own? Oh well, they had the power to steer them in the right directly anyway. Aneesa wasn't high up on any priority lists in the Capitol- what if they sent something to drag her out of her sleep and dissect her with claws as big as her hand? Or what if another tribute happened across them and decided to catch the building they slept in on fire? There were a million possibilities and each was as terrifying as the next, and this was exactly why she never wanted to leave the house.

But eventually the sun came up, and her eyes felt heavy and her limbs aches and her patience felt stretched to the max. Her fingers shook unsteadily, her muscles begged her for relief her mind refused to hand over. She needed to sleep, she knew that. But she... couldn't let herself. Not yet.

She could handle it for now, she thought.

And then before she could even think to save herself from them, the monsters she feared arrived and tried to take her, after all.

"No!"

One looked a sinister cross between a dragon and some sort of insect, with long thin wings that fluttered like a house fly. Oh. A dragon fly. Ha. It would've been a lot more funny if Gavin wasn't the punchline. It soared down on him, crashing in a heap while the other creature- a bloated, sentient-looking plant monster, used the distraction to swing at Aneesa.

Something ripped into the flesh of her arm, right up by the shoulder, and she screamed out in pain against it, throwing the- vine? Arm? Whatever, she pulled it away from herself and bolted over to Gavin as quickly as she could. She might not have been a good fighter, but she was a good friend. She'd always been a good friend.

Did that mean Gavin was her friend?

She opened her mouth to say something- maybe before she would've had something courageous and cool to say, but all she could muster through the queasy feeling boiling within her was- "Are you okay?"

His answer was to fire a bullet directly into the thing's back. She thought it was more than enough to kill it, surely, but then she heard the disgusting hum of its wings as they began to lift the creature back off the ground. She gripped the javelin in her hand and jabbed it at the thing to push it away.

Gavin is safe, Aneesa is willing to stay, and Sasha has kind eyes. If none of those reasons are enough to be happy, I think quietly to myself, then I might just be miserable forever. That's a thought with thorns, catching my skin and daring me to confront the way my chest still feels tight — even hours after the carnage, even though I fled from it. It's like I'm swallowing down a sob; like I've become a cage for my own grief. Sometimes, the conversations lull, and even the insects stop singing.

Gavin's alive.

The static creeps in without invitation.

And I'm in that room again. I try to escape, but by the end of the story, both of my hands are in the air. They force me into the train, into the Capitol, into fine fabrics and thick makeup, into four white walls and the sound of my own sobs echoing back to me. The silence has become familiar in the way that I think I might always be terrified of it, and that just makes the fear move deeper inside of me. I can hear Gavin's voice behind the haze, fingertips meeting in the opening beneath my door. "How's that tunnel coming along?"

I stare at a blank wall, and after a couple days, it stares back at me. Beau's hand closes around mine again, and I rest my head against his shoulder. I know he's looking down at me, in the way I know he has always been so ridiculously good at holding eye contact, but I struggle to face him. The truth lingers between us like a tether, and I know I'll have to confront it. "I should have ran with you." My empty palm spreads out against the cold floor, my dark hair hanging in the empty space beside me. These are the consequences of my actions.

Blinking back to reality, my arms are crossed over my chest, staring pensively at the sky. I hold my gaze for a moment longer, impressed not just from the view, but how vast everything is from this high up. When I squint, I feel like I can just make out the edge of the arena. I clear my throat, announcing my return to the alliance we've only just formed. Aneesa is almost finished with preparing beds for us, and I offer her an appreciative smile. "If you guys don't mind, I'll call dibs on that hammock there. I can take first watch, too."

Gavin and Sasha are together, and even though I want to go over and visit them, my shyness has returned in the absence of adrenaline. Honestly, as eager as I am to get to know this new girl, I miss having the privacy to tell my distract partner exactly what I'm feeling. Now I keep convincing myself to push it down. Save it for later. I know this isn't healthy, and I accept that I know this. Stubbornly, I go to the window and start to pull myself through. "Shut up, Hale. Say nothing. I already know I'm an idiot."

The roof has an odd slant, but eventually I find a stable spot to sit. I know I'm not really alone, so I try to be quiet with my breakdown. My breaths come quickly, a little panicked, and I run my hands through my hair as I urge myself to calm down. I feel a strange mix of emotions as I stare out at the sea of trees surrounding me, exhilaration and fear and desperate hope. "Get it together." It's easier to listen to myself when I say it aloud. "Gotta figure something out."

But nothing else comes to mind but the memory of cannons, and faces in the sky that I can only barely remember, some that are entirely strangers. And I hold my gaze for just a moment longer. A prelude to tears.

I wake up in the hammock, dry cheeks, and I emerge into chaos. I hear the flapping of wings against the building, too large to be anything I could possibly name from what little animal knowledge I have. For an awful moment, I wonder if it's not even creature, instead a drone sent by the Capitol to destroy me. All of us. Whatever the identity of my fear, I spring to action. My fingers close around the weapon I have nearest to me, the spear I collected during our first day of traveling. There's a blur of claws — a streak of red running down Gavin's leg. Terror swells inside of me. "I'm coming!"

But there's another terrible thud, Aneesa falling to the ground. "Oh, shit." My focus splits, and I give my attention to the immediate danger. "Hide under something, anything. Maybe I can lead it off." I turn on my heels, trying to locate what made Aneesa lose her footing, only to grimace when I finally notice the vines creeping through the exit hatch. They wriggle against the floorboards, and I prepare my weapon to strike. "You," I start somewhere between a growl and a hiss, "were not," maybe it's just that I've never been a morning person, "fucking invited! Get the fuck out!" Maybe I'm just overwhelmed.

I like to pretend that my words have power.

Like I don't want out, too.

The girl from Nine—Aneesa, a voice hisses behind my eyes and I have to roll them in reply.

Fine, Aneesa chuckles and sticks her hand right out to meet Gavin's when he stumbles forward and literally eats dirt, I think, and there's something in there that remind me of Maisy so much that it makes me sick to my stomach. It's a thing in her eyes, the kind of kindness that I've been staring into for so long they usually feel more like a mirror. The kind of anxiety that only builds where no one can see it, festering in the pit of her stomach. The immediate kindness and comfort with quiet—it's Maisy all over, and it's Aneesa all over, and I don't know what to do with that.

So I avoid her all day. Naturally.

I keep my distance at first, stick only close to Gavin even though it's clear he trusts Cecily immediately. He grabs the hem of my shirt at one point and I push him off. "My clothes are wrinkled enough without your grubby hands grabbing at them," I say.

Pretender, pretender, pretender.

I take his hand in mine instead. At least no one sees.

It gets harder once we go up the tower though, all of us huddled into that weird, sad empty space. Cecily is quieter than I expect her to be for a long time, and I make no effort to invite her into the conversation with Gavin I am not putting much effort into, but enjoying nonetheless. There's an exhaustion to all of us that no one wants to admit to, I think.

I don't notice her doing it at first, don't think twice about why she's walking around with armfuls of paper towel rolls but then—"what the fuck are you doing?" eyebrows furrowed. When she tells us that she's making us beds, I don't have words at first. I just look at her, feel nails in my palm where ever so slightly crescents are forming. She's not like Maisy. She's not like Maisy. She's not like Maisy. She's not like Maisy.

She's not Maisy.

I unclench my jaw.

"Perfect, we all need some beauty rest, I say," and then, when I think no one else can hear, I go over to her and say "me most of all." I don't know if this is kindness, but it's always what made Maisy smile. Something inside me vomits thinking it, but Aneesa maybe needs that, too. "I mean, look what that marsh did to my hair."

It's not a thank you.

I curl up on the paper towel next to Gavin anyway.

I should not have been last watch. I stand by that when two things hurdle themselves upon us and my first thoughts are scream—which I do, super fucking loudly, which definitely wakes everyone up—and then run. Gavin shouts and I shout right back, "what is that!" The ugly one with wings swoops down literally through all the metal and glass and I wan to be as far away from it as possible. Except run means run towards the only door to the fucking place, except literally creeping along everything are vines, just vines and another awful, ugly fucking thing that gouges at Aneesa before she barrels right past me towards the other one.

"This place sucks!" I shout foolishly, stabbing at a vine in the floor. Stupid plants. It's always fucking plants.

Brody's thrashing around before the bullet hits his back. It's a small space for a rather large dragonfly, scrambling and roaring in the shrapnel of the outhouse's shattered windows. Blood for blood, the brood guardian clambers to the east side of the room, swinging it's long neck narrowly above the head of the girl who struck him.

Call it performance anxiety, alright! Stabilizing, he strikes at the loudest target in the room:

It isn't more than a minute before a quick meal's allies turns up, one girl's spear stabbing through her bottom lip before the dragon takes its swipe at her. The mercury wo-man trap struggles to open its mouth, pinned shut until the spear's pulled back. She puckers up as she whips the second assailant with her looooong vines.

So I've learned two things today:

1. I can aim, neat!
2. Bullets are not super effective against giant bugs.

I feel more than I see the round tear from it's chamber, the kickback nearly enough to knock the gun from my white-knuckled grip. My hands are sweaty and my breaths kind of stutter when they leave my chest - I know I'm panicking and I'm kind of pissed about it. How am I supposed to survive - how am I supposed to protect them - if I'm already fending off a meltdown?

"Are you okay?" And I know it's stupid to turn away from the monsters bearing down upon us, but I'm grateful that Aneesa's voice gives me reason to. It takes a second for her to come into focus, if she notices the tears I'm blinking away I hope she's kind enough not to mention them. I know damn well what she wants to hear, I know the answer I should give. I even try to muster an encouraging smile though I think my lips just end up twitching like I'm about to sneeze.

"I don't think so." I never could bring myself to lie for another's sake. My gaze falls to her weapon and the crimson weeping through the gaps in her fingers where they curl around it. There's a nasty gash on her forearm but she still rushed to help me.

There's this awful part of me that wants to scream at her, to push her away and tell her to worry about herself because I'm not going to return the favor. Poison seizes in my chest, a sharp ache that has me biting down on my tongue until I taste blood.

I don't want kindness because I don't know what to do with it. "Aneesa-" Sasha and Cecily spring to life beside us, bearing down upon the gnarled abomination that somehow befriended the chicken. Fire and spite die on a shaky exhale, "please be careful." There's a softness to those words that I didn't think I was capable of.

"Hide under something, anything. Maybe I can lead it off." And I don't even have to look at Cecily to know she was the one who had that stroke of genius.

"And what, kill them yourself?" I almost round on her before I realize that completely turning my back on these mutts is asking for an early grave. I haven't quite decided on my death wish. "Don't be a hero."

"This place sucks!" It's nice to hear Sasha speaking sense for once.

"And blows!" It's a helpful addition, I think.

She guessed, at the very least, she should've been happy he was honest. She realized she had no idea what to say, or what to do to make him feel better, and then after that she realized something even worse: she should know what to say. She was a girl intimately familiar with trauma, and now she was forced to accept the bitter truth that she hadn't ever dealt with any trauma unless she was at the center of it.

Did that make her weak?

Or did it just make her selfish?

"Aneesa," Gavin called, and he heard the break where he wanted to say more. She heard the breath he expelled instead in his hesitance, and she supposed she couldn't blame him if there were things in his head he did not trust to roam free. Everyone had their monsters. Everyone.

"Please be careful."

She couldn't find the words, so she settled with a quick look that said something along the lines of Um, yeah, Careful is like my Whole Thing, obviously, before she ran. Vines swung in every direction with a reckless, hungry conviction, with thorns like jagged teeth taking a bite as they whipped across her.

She screamed, not in pain, but from fear. She was afraid. She was afraid. She was afraid. She wanted to live and there were literal monsters under her bed and all the fears she'd ever thought to be afraid of seemed valid here. That was what made her afraid most of all. There was nothing they couldn't do to her, and there was nothing they could do to her that she hadn't already done to herself in her mind.

The dragon creature swooped toward Cecily the moment she ran- again- to their aid. Ever the beating heart of their little band of misfit toys and broken things, Aneesa guessed. Gavin was the anxious brain, Sasha the smiling teeth. She wondered what she would be, if they were all different moving parts of one whole. She knew she was no hero herself. She wasn't particularly clever, or particularly funny, or particularly brave. She'd be the appendix. Small, unnecessary, and only noticed when it started causing trouble.

"Tell her to be careful!" she called to Gavin as she reached Cecily. She started to ask her if she was okay but she was too useless to do anything about it if she wasn't, and that just made more people who Aneesa let down that day, so she said nothing, she helped her to steady herself, made sure the wound wasn't anything too terrible, but she lost her train of thought when the vines seemed to choose Sasha as their next target.

No, no, no. This wasn't going well. This was going badly. It was her fault, too, she knew it.

"Shit, guys, I'm sorry!" She couldn't be next to all of them at once and trying was just making things worse for everyone. Shit. Shit. Shit. She thought for a moment that the gamemakers might've sucked all the air out of the arena, and then she realized that her body simply wasn't letting her take any in. Panic attack incoming. Fuck.

Kill it. Kill it. Kill it. She slammed her javelin right into the gun wound Gavin gave it and twist, but it wasn't enough. It spun and she was airborne, crashing next to Sasha in a heap. She was shaking and she was pretty sure that even if she weren't having a panic attack, she wouldn't be able to breathe now.

"Just die already!"

"Don't be a hero."

The words strike me like a bullet — the muted bomb of gunfire echoing inside a small room. My ears are ringing, and my breaths are heavy. Gavin asks me point blank if I'm going to fight these monsters myself, and a stubborn voice dares me to scream out, "Yes! I sure fucking am!" But the awful sounds only get worse, a symphony of all my least favorite instruments.

Claws scrape against the tin roof, glass hits the floor, there are hisses of pain from both sides of the war. I look at my friends, and I can see the bloodstains blossoming through their clothes. Panic sets in, and I hardly know how to react when a scaled hand reaches through the window, catching my bicep with its sharp talons and tearing straight through the muscle. I gasp out, stumbling back a step.

The overwhelmed feeling returns as I stare down at my wound in shock, trying to turn the mess of red into an excuse to be brave, and not a reason to be terrified. I can't give in to the anxiety trying to course through my body, especially not now. Not when they need me, and I realize how afraid I am of losing them. It makes me want to take their hands and start running again.

But I've run out of ground.

"Tell her to be careful!"

Exhaling through my teeth, I lie and tell myself I won't regret neglecting my cut. It's not like I have much of a choice either way, not with the vines inching closer, and the wings still buzzing wildly against the sides of the building. I can feel the vibration inside my bones, pushing the agony in my bicep down to the marrow. Not even my adrenaline rush is enough to numb it.

My fingers tighten around the hilt of my spear, grateful that at least for now, my dominant arm is still useful. As frightened as I am, I still try to whisper rational truths to myself. "It's just a scratch. That's all it is right now." I try to ignore the sensation of hot liquid running down my forearm, collecting in the palm of my hand. I close my fist around it like it belongs to me, like I'm ready to charge. "I'm okay. We're still okay."

Taking a moment to smirk at my allies, ignoring the shine of tears in my eyes, I turn back to the hatch and the plant that has long overstayed its welcome. "Don't worry about me." I'm speaking to Gavin and Aneesa, arching my weapon into a position to lunge. "I already know how my master plans usually end up." I'm surrounded by four walls again. And I feel stubborn, and I feel reckless.

And the static tries to consume me, so I drive the point of my blade through it. I'll do anything to get us out of here, even if I have to sever every last fucking vine myself.

Even when I run out of ground.

I'll run.

It takes less time than this fight to turn to shit for Brody to realize it's turning 4 on a very okay-ish 1. There's another shot, a small cut as the dragonfly tries to hobble his way back to the hell hole he crashed into this place through. His odds are worse than he is; a few wounds, enough time to escape and doing better than the other bitch! The shaking girl pins him to the ground with her spear, a puncture through the lower tail and a cacophony of vines crashes through the forest as the plant dies.

4 on 1 is here, like ants on a cayote.

Hell if he's staying here, Brody crashes through the same boy again as he tries to make his escape out of the tower.

- Cecily Deerling is a fucking icon legend and Gavin is right abt it being pointless to pretend otherwise
