Tsara managed to take down the second of the two mutts. I was grateful. I really wasn't ready to have that thing bite my leg off. It'd already dug into it deep enough to begin with, and it wasn't going to be welcomed back kindly for another taste. Then again, I didn't exactly welcome it the first time, either.

"Thanks," I say, giving a nod to Tsara after she takes down the plant mutt. I also give a weak smile to Sinead. I take my shovel out of my bag before turning to look at Whiskey.

"So, about earlier. What exactly got it ingrained in that head of yours that I would have pushed you?"

I keep eye contact with him for a few moments before plunging my shovel into the dirt. Something made me feel like digging here was what I should be doing. I mean, there wasn't a whole lot of purpose in digging here unless I planned on burying something, like mutt corpses, but nevertheless, it seemed like a good way to pass the time.

Maybe I would bury the mutt corpses, rather than letting them rot out in the sun. That kind of stuff would surely start to reek. I glanced at the corpses for a moment and back and Whiskey.

"Feel free to dig with me while you explain yourself," I suggested. I didn't know if he had a shovel, but he could dig with his hands for all I cared.

"Ripred, nice hit."

Whiskey stand slack jawed when Tsara's sword slices into the mass of vines and veins in front of hit, stumbling backwards when a splatter of green blood sprays out against his face as the mutt thrashes in his final moments. He wipes his fingers against his mouth, pulling the green goop away from his face and feeling it stick to his skin and seep in between his lips, bitterness running in waves from the source and causing him to gag slightly. "Fucking gross." He mutters, carving the spit from the back of his throat with a loud gargle and spitting it to the ground below.

He throws a nod to Sinead and a weak grin to Tsara, half-mumbling the words "Rest up kid, plenty more damage than yesterday to come." out into the air as he finally loosens his grip on the spear's handle. He thinks the words are something halfway between respect and support, but the more they twist and dissipate into the air the more he's met with complete silence, and it's not the fun kind.

There's still embers of rage that float in the back of his mind and the pit of his stomach, stuck somewhere in the void of his own fragile ego and the bloody fangs that show every time he smiles. Little wicks dancing in the wind, and as the adrenaline of their mutt fight finally draws to a sputtering close it's like oxygen is breathed deep into the flames again. He spins on heavy heels as Nixie addresses him, eyes looking up and down her form with a scowl on his face.

His hand still holds the spear loosely within his grasp, metal catching the sunlight and a million little sparks of light dancing from its skin. Easy." He says and the words feel like a snake's bite. "I felt hands on my back, and then I fell in." The truth itches at his core, questionable doubt in himself bubbling up to the surface before dissolving in the anger that has shrouded his judgement for so long. He bites through the only doubt he has in himself and waves an arm half-hearted towards their two other allies. "Tsara's like, eight, and super banged up-" He casts a glance towards their youngest ally, eyes saying no offense. "I don't think she's pushin' anyone. And Sinead?" His eyes drift towards their ally, chewing on his words. "Well, between a girl from Twelve and a Career? Fuck, I'll always trust the Twelve more."

He's monologuing and it feels like there's half bullshit and half ego spread out between his teeth by the time he's done talking, almost patting himself on the back for only using one swear word in the rant. A snort breaks from his nose when Nixie tells him to dig, all commander and chief and nothing he can respect. "I ain't diggin'." He states plainly, crossing his arms and lowering himself down on the nearest rock, kicking his feet out in front of him. "Don't even know what you're lookin' for. A fossil? Damn buried treasure?" He mumbles to himself.

"So.." He lets his words trail off, cocking his head as he looks towards Nixie. "Why don't you explain yourself? Why'd you push me, Nixie?" The spear slides against his thigh as he leans forwards and spits directly at the spot where Nixie's shovel threatens to break ground, blood and dirt mixed into the saliva.

"Cause I've got a bad taste in my mouth when I look at ya, and it's not from that mutt's blood."

Whiskey insists that he felt hands on his back before he fell in, but I know he's full of shit. He tried to explain why he thought I'd done it by narrowing it down between Sinead, Tsara and I, and honestly, he sounded ridiculous. The guy just wanted someone to be mad at. I'd met people like that before. It wasn't anything new to me, but I hadn't actually done anything this time, truthfully. If he kept it up enough, though, maybe I would later.

He asked me why I was digging and what I was looking for— if I was looking for a fossil or something. As soon as he said it, though, I happened to find exactly that. I reached into the hole, picked it up, and looked at it. Then, I looked at Whiskey.

"Actually, I did find a fossil," I said to him matter-of-factly.

Then he asked me to explain myself. He wanted to know why I pushed him. I obviously hadn't, yet he still somehow had that damn thought driven into his skull. There were other things I'd like to drive into his skull if he kept this up, though. My shovel, for starters.

"First of all, I'd recommend not blaming your own clumsiness and paranoia on me. Just because you thought you felt someone push you, doesn't mean anyone did, unless that stupid plant thing had hands or that lizard really had it out for ya." I looked at him sternly. I wasn't going to just let him throw the blame on me. Had I done something wrong, sure, I might eventually stop fighting him on this, but I'm not at fault this time, so I'll be as stubborn as I have to be.

"You want an explanation from me? I was too busy actually hitting the mutts to be able to push you. Maybe if you could learn to aim you'd see other things better, too, like how no one was even close enough to you to push you." My jaw was clenched when I finished speaking. I wasn't sure if I should keep going while Whiskey was holding his spear. I could've just gotten myself into a really shitty situation with my words.

Then again, what else was new?

Surely Sinead and Tsara wouldn't let Whiskey just kill me for being a little snippy when he accused me of something I didn't even do, right?

It was Sinead who snapped her out of the shock.

The shock of killing.

The shock of watching something twitch and die on the end of her blade.

Tsara shuddered. She tucked the machete under one arm, bowed her head, and trudged behind her ally. "Thanks," Nixie said. "Ripred, nice hit" Whiskey congratulated her.

Tsara waved a hand as though to brush aside the compliment or praise or whatever it was. But really, she was shaking so badly, she needed to move a bit to dump some of the adrenaline. "Rest up kid, plenty more damage than yesterday to come." Tsara nodded, numb to the words, numb to the pain, numb to what she had just done.

It was clear they weren't going to get much farther, so she followed Nixie's lead. Tsara dropped her pack, dug through it for something useful and came across the black box again. It wouldn't be much for digging -- "Tsara's like, eight, and super banged up-" "Am not!" -- but maybe it would help her calm down.

Static.

And then a crackling. "Breaker six, how about you come back. Tsara, you copy? We just finished putting down two lizard things. Had a bite taken out of me but it’s not so bad. You okay, over?”

She stared at the damned possessed thing, then up at Whiskey and Nixie. Their fight was ramping up, she could tell that much, and it seemed to her that while they both had good reasons to be mad at each other, the fight was also about something else, too. Something she couldn't yet understand.

She fiddled with the dial. Pressed a button and held it tightly. "Uh, Breaker? Is that like a nickname or a password or something? Anyhoo, I'm listening and wow, good job on the lizards. One came for us too and this other plant contraption. I killed it. I can't believe I did that." She paused, tears welling up. "Are you okay? Tell me you're okay. I need to know you're okay."

Tsara held on, seconds ticking by.

And then she could no longer ignore Nixie and Whiskey's fight. She gave the black box a little hug, tucked it away in her plastic bag and walked cautiously up to Nixie's side. She didn't know what to say, exactly, only that it felt better to be close to them while they argued.

She felt a piece of her die as the pitfall lizard slumped to the ground at the hand of her arrow. Sinead knew they were creation of man - a vision of bloodthirst, designed to kill, yet the thought of life taken by her actions disgusted her, but in a way also numbed her.

Sinead knew that this was a feeling that would never go away, especially now as the sunset over the basin and day three crept closer and closer. She lay on her back, the droning of Whiskey and Nixie's arguing in the distance. She threw a pebble up and down, inches away from her face. The thumping of the pebble in between her fingers calmed her.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The lizard's body falls to the ground.

Thud.

"I'm going on a walk," she told her bickering allies, "with peace and love, can you guys figure your shit out before I come back?"

She eyed Tsara and offered her a weak smile. It seemed they were the only two handling their sanity thus far. Sinead was beginning to wonder if the cost of her sanity amongst Whiskey and Nixie was worth the price of loneliness.

After all, it was the two underdogs of the alliance who were able to take down the mutts. The thirteen year old and the girl from Twelve.

The trustworthy girl from Twelve, apparently.
