It took her hours to calm her breathing and quell the shaking in her hands. It wasn't that she'd killed the beast, it was that she had to. It was that even now, she was convinced that at the very least she was on thin ice with her allies. Especially now that she was showing them all exactly what she was made of. She was not a girl built to survive things like this. Not anymore. But eventually, she did feel her shoulder relax, and her breathing did eventually even out, and the others did all eventually convince her everything was going to be okay, and she did eventually fall asleep.
The next morning, she was just grateful that none of them mentioned it. She didn't like who she'd become, and she didn't like who the arena was crafting her to be. But that wasn't their fault. None of this was. None of this was any of their fault, and yet she'd still subjected them to her pathetic sniveling like a little spoiled brat who'd never been told no. She didn't want to become a nuisance. She didn't want them to hate her. But she didn't blame them if they did in the end.
She could smell death in the air.
It could've just been the dried blood from the broken nose, but the air smelled like rust and the nothingness of the area they were in threatened to swallow her whole. She was in the biggest grave she'd even seen, a giant bowl where once life had been. Why they were even here to begin with, she had no idea. No cover, not many items, and she expected if any other tribute wanted to come over and strike them down, now was the chance.
Deep breath in. She was far from the leader of this alliance, and so she walked in the very back of the pack, quietly wishing that Sasha might start complaining about the dirt so Gavin could suggest leaving to Cecily. That way, Aneesa wouldn't feel like she was a know-it-all, or like she was trying to tell people what to do when she already had the alarming knowledge that, of its parts, she was the least important piece of their alliance. Cecily a beating, brave heart. Sasha a silver, articulate tongue. Gavin a clever, loving brain. Maybe Aneesa was more than an appendix at this point, but she was no heart, no brain, no tongue. She never would be.
She had stopped to tie her shoe when she first heard the engine. The rest of the group was a good twenty or thirty paces ahead of her, and she called out to them, "Guys?" The slightest vibration began to shake the loose pebbles on the dusty surface of the ground. A low hum grew into a mechanical growl, and then before long, an echoing roar. A vehicle- her family certainly wasn't wealthy or important enough to own one back home, but she wasn't an idiot. She knew one when she saw it barreling directly toward them. She was off-course for them, though, if their plan was to run the four of them down. She initially wanted to race over to her friends, but she had a feeling it would've just made their job easier, so she kept her distance and watched in horror as the vehicle kept pushing forward.
There was no dodging something like this, right? Not when someone was doing it with intention. Not when there was nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. They could have tried running, sure, but for what? These people had an engine to carry them as fast as they needed to go. They could reach both ends of the arena in the same day- in only a few hours, even. There was nowhere they could hide where these people would not find them.
She took advantage of the fact that she was off-center, though.
They had a car? Fine. Aneesa had fire.
At best, it meant she could potentially catch the vehicle on fire and force them out of it. At worst, it might've been enough to scare them away before anyone had to die.
She collapsed to her knees, emptying her bag of the tar and the flint. For a moment, she remembered how similar this was to her private training session. Only now, instead of a pile of peacekeeper memorabilia, it was a car full of kids. She had to wonder if she was making the right decision, and knew it didn't matter. She didn't have a choice. Not if she wanted to make sure everyone who'd taken a chance on her was okay.
She sparked the flint, and watched the flames catch on.
Was she strong enough to do this?
The vehicle's tires spun so much dirt that the entire area was covered in dusty fog.
She had to be.
She rose back to her feet, and tossed her javelin right at the vehicle before they had the chance to run down her or any of her friends.
