Thud. Thud. Thud.
A mallet pounds against their skull in sync with the beat their heart. It echoes, and roars, and Maddox tries to run away from it, but it is impossible. Sweat rolls form their brow, dripping into their eyes. Hair plasters to the side of their face along with their blood.
It is hard to breathe, hard to even think, and at this moment the only thing on their mind is to find a place to hide, a place to rest, but in this arena it is impossible. A parched tongue sticks to the roof of their mouth begging for something to drink, something to quench the thirst. Maddox rests a tired head on their hand as they keep moving through the arena unsure of where their destination may be.
A couple cannons echoed through the day, and curiosity of who has died crawls through their mind, yet it isn't enough to make them stop.
Until they fall, and they roll down, down, down coming to rest somewhere in the midst of the crater. It's hard to stand when the entire world is spinning. It's hard to find solid place on the ground when it is moving, but somehow they stand, and they keep moving until moving is impossible.
Removing the tarp from their bag, Maddox places it on the ground before slowly lying down on top of it, and they watch as it grows darker and darker, and they try closing their eyes, but sleep refuses to come. Instead Maddox rolls around trying to get comfortable. Bones ache from lying on the ground.
And then the anthem lights up the sky, and for the first time Maddox sees who all has died. For a moment, there is a bit of sorrow. Ginny was someone they knew, someone they battled with -
Someone they let win.
But it doesn't matter because the dead are gone while the living remain.
Closing their eyes, they try falling asleep again, yet it doesn't come. The ground trembles, and the temperatures are dropping, and the wind makes it even more unbearable. They wrap the tarp around them trying to shield themself from the wind, and it works a little bit; however, it doesn't offer much relief.
And as they close their eyes, bloodcurdling screams echo loudly.
Maddox jumps up, grabbing the spear preparing for what is going to come, but as the screams grow on, they realize it isn't anyone nearby. It is the sound of their family, their brothers and parents.
Someone has them.
Someone is trying to kill them.
One foot after another, Maddox runs trying to find their family because saving them is important. Saving them is more important than life itself at the moment.
They turn left and right and left again, yet the voice doesn't seem to leave. It is right there.
"Mom! Dad! Hawkins! Jarrad!"
It's almost as if their screams grow louder and louder, and no matter which way they turn, they can't seem to find a way to escape, and they stumble again, tripping over their own feet, and they meet the ground hard.
For a moment the wind is knocked out of them, and it is hard to stand. Heavy eyes dart around begging for a place to escape, but the darkness makes it hard to see exactly where they're going. Yet the sun is rising, and it offers some light, and for a moment Maddox believes they are lost as the screams finally cease, but they keep running at full force as the sounds echo through their mind.
One step after another only stopping to rest to catch their breath, the run slowly comes to a walk. It is hard to breathe, and their eyes are heavy, and all they want is to fall over and catch some sleep.
They don't even realize someone is there until it's too late.
Oh no.
It takes every ounce of strength not to apologize because sorry doesn't matter, and Maddox tries to continue on their way hoping they can find an escape and catch some shut eye before they crumble from exhaustion.
