Despite knowing that I had them waiting for me, I still felt so lonely last night.

I don't know when I fell asleep. It was like the other night with Arthur. It felt like he was there, watching over me. I thought back to that night. It was the first night we didn't fight. All because I prayed, and he wanted to know why. There was no malice in his words, no anger. Just curiosity. I talked to him about things I never thought I would. My family, my feelings. And he listened.

That night I tried to wrestle with my emotions. The anger, the fear, the frustration. I wished there was something I could have done. But I knew there was nothing. He was just... gone. Gone in a single moment. Gone instantly. And maybe it's good, he didn't suffer. He wasn't slowly hacked to pieces. But... he was still dead. He was still fucking gone no matter how "nice" of a death it was.

There was still so much I never knew about him. So much I wanted to know. I knew I had to sleep, I might be walking a while before I find my new allies. But, I couldn't for the longest time. I prayed for him. Prayed that God saw that regardless of his sins or flaws, he was still a good person. It's an easy mistake to make, I thought he was a bad person when I first met him. A sinner, a traitor, a dumbass. But really, he's probably the best person I met.

As I drifted off to sleep that night, I couldn't help but think one thing. Avriel was right. It was better to have seen him die than to have never of known him. Arthur Rollei was my friend, maybe even my best friend, and I wouldn't trade for that for the world. Part of me still wants to believe he's not dead. Sometimes I feel like I can still hear him making jokes, laughing. But, there's nothing.

The next morning, I woke up out of surprise. I was with my allies again. Well, my allies and Whiskey. I felt my anxiety peak with him around. But there was a pro to that, it kept me awake and on my feet. As we began to head out, I was behind the jeep going through my weaponry when the asshole backed into me, saying some bullshit about his blind spots.

"There isn't a blind spot, Whiteclaw!"

He said something back, but I honestly didn't care what it was as I climbed into the back of the jeep. Before I even knew what was happening, some asshole shot Sinead. It looked bad, to say the least. But, Sinead cut his fucking arm off. Damn, I'd say they're even. I also knew I didn't want to get in the middle of that bloodbath. That's when from the back of the jeep I noticed one of his allies and grabbed a javelin.

"Hey slow down a little, I don't want to miss!"

"Whoops."

Whiskey can't help the small hint of amusement that threads itself into his words as he feels the back of the Jeep bump harsh into Abel's crouched form, hearing the boy hit the foliage with a grunt and a thud. There's a whine and a groan, all boo-hoo and ouchie-wouchy and Wiz rolls his eyes, foot pushing on the break and words pushing Abel's buttons. "You were in my blindspot."

The trees bleed into one another as they jeep gains speed, kicking up dust and dirt and every bloodied ghost that trails along with them through this arena, bravery and fear and all the little bits of nothing that they have left to give. Whiskey chews on whats left of the spit in his mouth, tasting iron and ore and little drops of poison in between the curse words that sit on the edge of his tongue and tightening his grip on the rubber steering wheel as the figures in the distance quickly fade into view. "Shit." He mutters, easing up on the gas. "We've got company."

And company has them too, because one moment he's hearing the crack of the gun and the next Sinead's blood splatters across the side of his face and shock sprints through his system as he prepares for the sound of another cannon to cut through the sky. Instead he only hears her scream, and it feels so bitter and tasteless and everything treacherous to admit he'd rather have his ally alive and in unbearable pain than dead and buried.

There's a gun that's digging into his spine, curling steel claws into his shoulders as he pulls himself forwards from the drivers seat, "Nixie, wheel?" hardly leaving his tongue before he stands and feels the vehicle swerve left, right, threatening to spin out of control completely before Nixie grabs it with a distasteful sigh.

It's all his childhood reenactments of war realized inside his teenage nightmare, staring down the scope of a rifle he just picked up yesterday and trying to get his hands to stop shaking, trying to be a man, and he can hear his father's voice leaving little snake bites in the back of his mind as he rests a finger on the trigger.

Fucker never gets the chance, damn.

Steel threads itself into his peripheral vision and he instinctively ducks away from it, only looking back up to catch Abel's spear bury deep into the body of a girl he doesn't know. And it's sick, the way his bubble stomachs and the way the silence clashes with the boom of a cannon,

and the way it all feels so normal when his instincts kick back in, hands grabbing the steering wheel and eyes scanning the landscape for a sight of their escape before their enemies can retaliate.

Quit before ya even start, it's the goddamn Finch way after all.

"Sinead, you still breathin'?" He calls back, throwing a glance into the rearview mirror before his gaze drifts briefly to the boy he'd considered so less than mere heartbeats ago. Now, his throat feels like it's closing when he looks at him.

"Remind me not to bump into the guy with the jeep again..." He mutters under his breath to Nixie, watching the landscape bleed into a blur as they speed away.

Luya Feng was her name. She was the one that I'd killed so mercilessly. She was the one whose death I silently reveled in after ending her life. I now had a name to put to the face. It was strange, knowing the name of the girl I'd killed. Before, she was a nameless entity, and it didn't feel as personal. Now, it was much more like she was a real person. I mean, she was a real person, but this made it feel even more like it. I still didn't feel guilty, though, and I wasn't sure why. I just felt... different.

We met up with Abel the next day. Sinead had talked to him over the walkie talkie the night before and found out that his ally, Arthur— Tsara's district partner— had been killed. So, we agreed that we'd take him in. I never had a problem with the guy, so there was no argument from me on the matter. I just hoped he was doing okay after losing Arthur. It was tough to lose a friend. I had learned that with Tsara. It still hurt that she was gone.

I wondered how emotionally wounded Luya's allies were after I killed her. I suppose if there was one thing I felt guilty about with the whole ordeal, it was about how her allies would feel after losing their friend, rather than the actual act of killing Luya.

At that point in the fight, I was just putting Luya out of her misery, although I suppose I'd started her misery, too. I didn't let myself think about it too much more. I didn't want to start feeling guilty. I just wanted to continue to have that feeling of enjoyment. The thrill of the kill. It was something I didn't want to fade.

Whiskey backed into Abel with the jeep that morning. He was just further proving that he really wasn't the Picasso of driving. Unless, of course, you mean that he's a bit abstract in his work, in which case, sure, he's Picasso.

When he backed into Abel, he said something about a blindspot and Abel called him 'White Claw' in response. I was thinking right then that I could really go for a White Claw, but I didn't say anything.

Everything was a blur as Whiskey drove us through wherever it was we were in the arena. He slows down a bit when he notices some other tributes, but it doesn't seem like the best idea, as Sinead takes a bullet to the back. We must've slowed enough for them to be able to aim.

I reluctantly take the wheel when Whiskey asks me to and he takes aim. He's not the first of us to strike, though. Abel's javelin soars through the air, seemingly faster than the other tribute's bullet, and strikes down one of the opposing tributes. She was dead.

My jaw dropped in shock and I let out a nervous laugh. This was the first I'd actually seen Abel fight, and he was impressive. Like, really fucking impressive. He'd gotten a kill in one shot. I wondered if he'd done it before, but I decided it was best not to actually ask him that.

Whiskey checked in on Sinead, and we sped off.

"Remind me not to bump into the guy with the jeep again..." Whiskey muttered to me.

"For sure," I muttered in response.

I didn't want to get on Abel's bad side if he had aim like that.

As we sped away, I wondered how Abel felt about killing. Did he enjoy it as much as I had? For some reason, I doubted it. He just didn't seem the type.

He didn't seem the type.

Did I? Did I seem like the type to enjoy the occasional murder?
