"Gold-winged angel
Go home, don't tell
Anyone what you are."
Aneesa gets a spear through her eye and just like that, she's dead. Avriel pauses over his oatmeal, the early morning holding his thoughts hostage. Thoughts drip slow, like the coffee brewing loudly on the kitchen counter. He watches the spear fly through Aneesa's eye again in slow motion during the replay, little Abel O'malley, the kid from the elevator, standing in the aftermath of it.
For a moment, there's a knife in his hand and blood on his shirt. He's watching Ariel's spear fly through Nora's head.
Avriel's spoon falls back into the bowl with a clattering sound and he pushes the oatmeal away. The kids on screen scatter after that, the fight over before it could even really start. He rests his forehead on the table, drinking the silence of the aftermath in. The apartment is dark grey around him, he woke up to cloudy skies at six and left the lights off.
He figured that if there was no strip of light coming out from under his apartment door, maybe they'd leave him alone.
And it's nice to hold the keys, to lock everyone out and pretend that he's not home. How long can he do that for, until someone comes looking?
He props himself up on his elbows and laces his fingers over the back of his neck. For a long moment, he is somewhere else. His knife isn't cutting enough, they're killing Blade, he's losing her. Again and again, always losing her.
Merde.
Avriel looks up again at the tv. They're onto another fight now but there's a little grey icon of Aneesa's face and information running along the bottom of the screen for anyone just tuning in. She's dead, probably the first of many. There were twenty-two years between Avriel's win and Colgate's after all.
It could be a long time before they let a Nine win again. He's going to have to get used to this. He knows that, it just feels difficult to breathe, like something heavy is standing on his chest, cracking his ribs down into his lungs, crushing him.
Aneesa's his first loss since the 89th finale.
He stands and brings his bowl over to the sink. The coffee's done brewing and it's starting to smell burnt. Av gets a little shot gloss out of the cupboard and fills it three quarters full, then drops a cube of sugar in. Scout's already climbing onto the counter.
"Aneesa's dead," he tells the kodama and then he pours his leftovers down the drain. The little mutt doesn't seem to care. It cups the shot glass like a mug and glows softly in a content sort of way.
"Honestly, I barely knew her," Av says and he runs a sponge around the rim of the bowl, over and over. "And I know this is supposed to hurt, but it doesn't," he says.
His phone lights up and jitters around on the counter. The caller ID reads 'Devil'. It makes sense that Gloria would call him. She probably wants him to release a statement about Aneesa, or maybe just yell at him for not doing enough to keep her alive.
He picks the phone up and drops it into the sink, then turns on the tap.
It stops ringing.
