sasha dupree;
There's a javelin in Aneesa's gut and Sasha can't breathe.
She is, despite her body's best efforts, but it's felt like every single breath has been a gasp, a half-inhale, the faintest of things. Just enough to keep her alive, but not enough to send any actual oxygen to her brain, she's pretty sure, because it feels like her head is empty and her chest has been hollowed out. Gavin is sitting in the back of the Jeep with the tiny girl from Nine that Sasha tried so very fucking hard not to love, and she feels on the edge of everything.
Girl on the verge, she's about ready to shatter.
She can't remember driving away from the other alliance, can't remember anything past the moment where the boy from Eleven sent a javelin sailing through the air and it buried itself in Aneesa. It made Sasha want to bury herself, just get out of the Jeep and run away, but she can't. She can't leave Aneesa. She just. Can't.
Maisy's voice in her ear, saying her name. Sasha? She hadn't known hearing her own name could feel like the earth coming out from under her.
But it had. Fuck. It had.
So Sasha drove, panicking, Aneesa's blood spattered across her neck and in her hair and she thinks she can feel it caked on the side of her face. Gavin and Cecily's hands are covered in it, stained red and raw from keeping pressure and trying desperately, so fucking desperately, to keep the girl from Nine hanging on. She catches a glimpse of herself in that tiny mirror above the steering wheel, and she has to look away; exquisite girl, girl with monsters behind her eyes and fangs where a smile should be, girl with no control over the fact that the world saw her as beautiful and decided to take control, she sees herself coming apart at the seams. Aneesa bleeding out three feet away, she wishes that she felt more like an omen, like a threat, like something awful and powerful and like something that could tear this place down just to get Aneesa out of here.
Just to make sure Maisy never ends up here.
But she isn't. She doesn't know if she's ever been that girl.
So she carves half moons into the palms of her hands, tries to pretend they don't want to tremble, and does everything she can to make the image of Eleven's javelin arcing through the air stop playing on a loop in her head. Arms curled around her knees, she sits away from the group, unsure of what Cecily is doing. But she watches her rummage around and thinks, maliciously, what are you doing to help.
Sasha tries not to turn it around on herself.
She extends no invitation, but Cecily's eyes flash up to meet hers as if she was called anyway, and Sasha grits her jaw. She doesn't smile. She doesn't get up and walk away either.
