The cannon for the boy from Nine sounded as my machete's blade went directly into his eye. It was so instantaneous. I hadn't expected the fight to be done so quickly, but I'd accept it as it was. His body fell into the sand of the dunes and I walked away from it at a leisurely pace, as if nothing had happened.
Of course, something had happened. I was one of three tributes left alive in the arena. Home and victory were getting so much closer, and I wanted them both so badly. Of course, I needed the victory to ensure the venture home alive. So, that's what I'd have to do. I'd have to win. I wouldn't let anything or anyone get in my way of that, even if it meant Whiskey were the one I had to fight to the death.
Whiskey and the girl from Five were the only ones left. I wondered who I'd have to fight. One of them? Both of them? Would they take each other out simultaneously and I'd just win right there? I highly doubted the last one. Victors didn't become victors without putting in the work.
Emmy was still in my pocket. I eventually settled somewhere, sitting while leaned up against one of the giant dunes. I let her come out of my pocket and she rested on my lap as I sat there. Again, it was quite comforting. It just felt good to have her presence there every time, right after I'd won a fight.
The finale was inching closer and closer, and I was sure I'd be a part of it. I just had to be the one to come out on top, in the end.
Marina was surely on the edge of her seat at home during each of my fights. I wouldn't doubt that my parents were, too. They were rooting for me and wanted me to come home. I was going to make that particular wish come true for them. I was determined, and when I was determined about something, I got what I wanted.
