The invitation rested limply in her fingers as she stared outside of her window. She was no longer a Gamemaker, having bowed out after the 88th Games, but she was still a socialite by blood and training and it kept many doors opened for her. She had been invited to a special viewing of the finale and while she had spent the year trying to take a break, it would have been considered rude for her not to accept. With a heavy sigh, she placed the invitation back on her desk and made her way to her closet.
Her fingers brushed through the rows of silken robes that were more appropriate for the warm days, and they lingered on the bright coats that were softly padded. Only one of them had caught her eyes, and she whisked it on as if it was second nature. Yes, former Gamemaker Callienta Minorae was not going to go back into that building without a flare of fashion.
Spectator eyes gave her a brief glance before returning to the spectacle as Callie walked through the rows, her own eyes seeking a special person. And there he was, brown-haired, slender and tall. Harbinger Rhodes. She had watched his Games, in its Celtic themes and foggy setting. It was well done by Ms. Copperview and Ms. King, and it had given her much to think about when she led her first Games in the 76th. But Callie did not want to discuss that side of the Games with the Victor; she was there to make friendly conversation.
“Is this seat taken?” she asked rhetorically, already sitting down next to the young man. She was not much older than him, but as part of her status and upbringing, she knew she was much wiser. Perhaps he had learned the ways of the Capitol after 17 years, but there was something about being a District 11 boy…
“It is a pity-,” she started, never turning her head to look at him. “-what had happened to your family. But as sad as their stories are, I have always been interested in yours, Harbinger.” Callie briefly glanced at Harbinger, measuring him in the span of a second. “Killing your ally? Astounding. Had you been stringing the other three along the whole time? Waiting until the right moment to get rid of them? I am shocked that Beretta was not on to you earlier.”
Callie adjusted her coat before continuing, her eyes still fixed on the viewing screen. “How did you do it?” she whispered softly. “How did you convince yourself to kill her?”
