FLYNN GARNER
YEAR OF THE 89TH
It is time to go home. It is over, they will be putting Aurora and Jack in their coffins right now I bet. Ready to pack them away like luggage onto the train. I have not rehearsed what I am going to say to their families yet. What exactly am I meant to say to Aurora’s? There are no words that will bring their daughter back, they will probably spit them right back into my face. I would. I would stomp all over them. I never saved their daughter like I promised yet here I am, writing an application to try and save so many other lives.
A premature college application, they will deny me anyway, but it is worth the try. Too young. Too late in handing in the application. They are the first two obvious brick walls that are stopping me and then there is the whole, will the Capitol allow a victor to become a full time surgeon? . Yeah, I am not going to ask. That is why I have given no explanation to the handful of Capitol big name socialites that I have asked to write their name next to a few positive sentences about me. They probably thought I was asking for their autographs anyway.
I am short on the victor refences though and if I don’t get a move on, it will be too late for a whole year. I am only going to see the District Four’s again on their tour and well, I need more of a variety to get a chance at enrolling into the college. It is time to take a trip on the elevator and pray I bump into someone decent.
The elevator is coming down when I get to it, hopefully it is filled with everyone from seven to twelve. That will cover all my bases before they all get onto their trains. But the sliding doors do not reveal an overcrowded glass human moving tube. It is Stella from Twelve, she is kind. Hopefully she has the time. ”Are you leaving yet?” I say as I step into the elevator. My sack is filled with note paper and a handful of pens. ”Please can you do me a favor, if you have the time?” I don’t wait for her to say yes or no before pulling out the notebook and a nice fancy Capitol bespoke fountain pen. ”I am trying to get into the college at home, to y’know do the typical District Six stuff and well I need a few references from people. I mean, a lot of people. Just a few sentences about, what you think about me, I guess.”
