VELVETTE BLAKE [ CASUAL CRUELTY ]
In life, she stands en pointe, teetering along the sharpened edge of a blade. She does a great job of covering the danger lurking below the surface with her talent. It's a luxurious one, sure, but it will only take one misstep for the cut to come. Not a matter of if, but when. She decided long ago that if failure means the end of something, she simply cannot fail. Which has left her with an intense need for perfection, and a tongue sharp enough to end every substantial relationship in her life just as quickly as it matters to her. Everything has to be just so, otherwise the fear settles in and she feels the need to preserve herself. And if that means severing a tie, well... She bites first every time, no matter why, no matter who. She feels that it's better to be feared and heard than it is to be loved and used.
Her parents would love for her to be more enthusiastic about being a good, modern career. They see the kids who volunteer for the Games and get themselves killed and think, "Wouldn't it be nice?" No, they don't even just think it. They try to expect it. Duty. She couldn't even imagine a version of herself existing where she's the type of person who simply 'goes along with it.'
Like those imbecile cousins of hers, no more evolved than the unfortunately-loony common ancestor shared between them: neither one had any idea just how under Uncle Bram's thumb they were. Or, her own older brothers. Well in Denim's case, up until he banished himself. (Bless him, by the time he realized it for himself, trying to wiggle his way free of their parents wasn't something they were willing to allow.)
He had to go and disappear in the night and never return to get his point across. And they, to get their own point across, disinherited him from the will and vowed to never speak of him again. And they haven't. Totally normal reaction from parents, right?
Ballet school is her way of escape- no one can complain about one of the youngest Blake's being enrolled in one of District One's most refined, prestigious training centers, so long as she agrees to come home for holidays and smile for all of the pictures. That's all she feels like, these days: a bragging point. A part of the lineup during a house tour, right between a photo of her father's boat and a blank space where Demin's graduation portrait used to be. Her mother tried everything to scrub the evidence of his existence away but despite her best efforts Vel can still see the faded edges on the wall where the frame used to be.
She's going to graduate from ballet school, and then she's going to... move to the Capitol and join a troupe there maybe. Or perhaps she'll book a leading role in a musical on Proudway. Either way, it'll be somewhere even further from their influence. They'll focus even more on Jersey- her other older brother- even more than they already do, and she'll eventually miss a holiday, and they'll eventually forget to call, and then eventually, she'll be free of them, once and for all.
Once she's independent, and has a career, and is... you know, generally successful.
Maybe she's more under her parents' thumb than she realizes.
Whatever, if she knows one thing its that she isn't going to end up like the rest of them have: hoping that they can land a training position at a place doing well-enough to cover dental. What will come of it, she wonders, all of them going off to work in different places doing the same job? She knows what: it'll just make the lines already drawn in the sand that much deeper. Any deeper and they'll become trenches, and that's when it becomes about the war.
By that time, she hopes to be long, long gone, but still in good graces, because obviously when her absolute monster of a father finally snorts something strong enough to stop his heart and her vacant-eyed mother gets her portion of the payout before flaking, the rest of it will be left to... who?
She finishes her stretches just in time. She stands to see the reflection of the instructor entering the room behind her. They make eye contact and she smiles. "Ready?" she asks.
