Enoch is the youngest branch on the tree that married together a new lineage of Alcotts. The tree is a complicated being, despite how it may appear at first glance. The bole, or his parents in this analogy, keep them upright as they are the last line of defense before falling victim to uprooting. The branches sway, push, and pull in the wind, but largely follow along to stay in position.

Not Enoch, though. He despises waiting for things to simply stay the same, where he's the smallest, frailest, and least connected to his family's knowledge and history. He swings for the other branches at the slightest breath of wind, chipping at their bark with harsh words or cruel acts. But composure is gained again, or rather false accountability is attained, when his mother pulls him back into line momentarily, reminding him that rules of the house apply to him just as they do his brothers and sisters.

Enoch plays along for a moment. His only advantage in life is the number of second chances his parents give him. But as they look away, his green eyes roll as he pulls at his sisters' family-promised blonde hair or kicks his brothers where he knows they'll feel it. They know something that Enoch doesn't, and he can't seem to come to terms with that. Age bias, he presumes, because if he were only a few years older, he would knock all their little branches to the ground. Trees don't have eyes to catch him in the act, but even if they did, his mother might very well turn blind upon noticing. Pride and joy such as Enoch can do no wrong, after all.
