It was strange to find another family after you had left one behind. A tragedy became miracle, became routine, and by the time he caught on, he was already a Gaultier in everything but blood.

He had not meant to stay for long. Really, what can a quaint, sewing district offer a boy soldier with a mission to fulfill? His task was simple: investigate the bombings, find the culprits. It was supposed to be a done deal.

Then arose Bella Noche.

It seemed conjured out of a dream at first: the extravagance, the opulence, the magic that made the air shimmer and dance. And having spent his years underground, he had never glimpsed true freedom before and it dazzled him. No one was in uniform here; no one was one thing or the other. The Bella Noche was a tapestry woven by glittering threads, each one a new color.

He secured his job by showing Haziel ten ways to hold a man down. Rho made him his papers, and that was a surprise, too. All the lessons in thirteen detailed Panem’s citizens as weak-spined and delicate, collateral and a means to an end, but Bella Noche spilled its banks with ambition. The girls and the boys in this place ... they craved, they loved, they dazzled, but most importantly: they lived.

He had never known a taste of that. He was curious.

And as the months passed, a new mission formed: protect this new family. Someone bullied Achilles at school once and he had not stopped walking the other up to the gates. A man attempted to touch Rho last week and they staggered home black-eyed, the bruise looking as if it will take weeks to heal. And whenever someone had to go to district six, it was Behroze escorting them to the office, a blade strapped under his boot just in case.

Family. It was what his heart pump and it was what made his lungs swell. Behroze had been offered a second chance. He will not waste it. It was strange to find another family after you have lost one, but it made you treasure them in ways unimaginable.
