Last year I brought Avriel to Dale’s diner, instead of eating the picky bits buffet that my family cooked up at the victor mansion. The same spread is out, this time in Teddy’s house. Though unlike Avriel, my opinion on Nixie Summers is a little unsteady. Maybe I am writing her with a stereotype, I can never forget what Nanette did for me in the arena. All those days of protecting each other. I have only seen Nixie from a distance, through a television screen and while in the audience for an end of Games event before we all headed home.
I guess I could intercept the newest victor during the dinner party and take her to taste some real food. To meet some real people. If she is kind enough.
”I am going across the road, hurry though because she is already there.” I tell my family, leaving them behind in the new big house that none of us has gotten used to yet. The entourage fills the doorstep of Teddy’s house, the same old people and the added extra from the District Four crew that I have never seen before.
It is easy to slip past them all, one budge of an elbow and overstepping of a foot and I am through the door and in the same room as the newest (but still not yet youngest) victor. ”I forget how many people are actually on these victory tours, I thought it was meant to be about one person?” I say, looking up at Nixie and immediately declining the glass of champagne that is shoved in my face. ”I can help you escape them for a moment…if that’s what you want?” I don’t know, maybe these career victors enjoy all of the attention. Or maybe I am writing her as the wrong person in my head.
