i find the hills holding conversations in the distance, whispers in an ancient language, so quiet and soft while the giants slumber in the roots of the district. the birds chatter idly of an imminent return, sing-song for the death of the world and a sweet rebirth.

some days my hands turn to rotting ferns and fall off, some days a silver minnow swims before my eyes, splashing in a cool stream of consciousness that looks like stars. but my Sindri only barks at blood, not visions.

my Sindri knows, and so i know.

my mother said this was a call from the gods – omens of a gift that lay dormant in our lineage.

and so mother taught me seiðr. like this, i learned the heartbeat of incantations, to read futures from the blood of foxes sprayed onto parchment, to weave a fate in threads spun from sheep killed at the altar. my father believed this to be women's work. one day, he took me to the cavern of a sleeping bear and gave me a knife with a hilt of bleached bone, smooth and beautiful in my hands.

"i will teach you of life and death."

hunter, that is who he wanted me to be.

i foretold his death that day. and i returned to the commune in his blood, mourned him, and washed away the remnants of my father, that beautiful knife, his only gift.

in my sixteenth year, i drank from the well anointed with Odin's blood. the water was bitter, dark – in a moment, i fell into the earth, seedlings tickling my bones as the old forests grew into us and swallowed my body whole. i watched Vali's birth as a stone in the dirt. and i watched this god grown from fury, pulled from the womb of a giantess greater than the mountains, shaking the soul of every living thing as she gave life to a burning being.

when i returned to Sindri licking my face, the seers welcomed me.

timekeeper, they called me. the one who treads backwards on the winding path.

"it is a gift," mother said.

a gift i did not want.
