"They're just plotlines." She turns to glance passively at her co-gamemakers, no remorse evident in her expression. "I mean, really, if you think about it." Her gaze returns to the entrance doors, only minutes away from welcoming the first tribute to make their introduction to the god kings reigning above them. There's a hunger in her that deepens with this one thought, a desperation for power that makes the more delicate details of this job easy to swallow. They have their own little tragedies, and their little dreams that have been stolen from them, but none of it matters to her. It can't.

She ends the day with a vodka shot, like clockwork, and all of her empathy dies in the fire. As far as she's concerned, their deaths are the appropriate punishment for ninety years spent living in the shadow of a terrible mistake. She wonders if they resent their ancestors for their stupidity, if they ever think about how sad it is that they've been forced into this torture experiment. "Let's hope they're captivating enough." She takes the time to check her appearance in her pocket mirror for good measure, wonders what beverages they'll be serving for brunch. "It's not like we're just going to kill them in the end."

Beat.

She laughs.
