This girl has never set a trap in her life.
Maybe she has in class, but you're watching her fiddle with the delicate bits and pieces so carelessly, even as her brows are furrowed and frustrated and she seems to think that she's paying close attention. It's a look that you've seen countless times in your life, a look you've worn yourself too. When you're trying to figure out a complicated experiment and make sure something doesn't blow up that shouldn't, when there's an algorithm you're trying to figure out the root of and can't quite put the pieces together. It's the kind of look that screams how you need help figuring out whatever is in your hands, while also shouting don't fucking look at me. Too familiar, you see it all over her.
She doesn't like not being able to figure it out.
Worse, she hates someone seeing it happen.
It's not in your nature to help, but she's from district two. There could be something to her that you're underestimating, something to her that you haven't seen yet. She could have something to offer, the least you can do is see if you want to take it.
You take a deep breath, lift your eyes to the ceiling and feel them roll before yanking the thin line of rope out of her hands.
"Like this," you say, tying the knot off around the spring quickly, nimble fingers too quick for her to catch you know. "If you tie it like that, it won't be able to slip when someone triggers it."
You undo the knot, holding the little trigger as you do so that it doesn't snap back at you and then shove it in front of her.
"Again, slower."
