She'd spent the last week after school getting ready for this carnival - more so, getting her shop ready. In 9, you're taught that no one makes it without the grind, and Yaya's always had her eyes on the coin. Star's are made through pressure, so she's not scared of a little hard work and elbow grease. If working two jobs after school gets her some kind of work permit out of nine, well.
You understand.
But Yaya's always loved this corner of Canal street. Mayor Irvine's words echo down the alley ways and she can make it out roughly over the rest of the cacophony District 9's evolved into this week - a carnival. Right here in her district, and all the life and music and love comes out with it like someone prayed for fresh rain. It's like a cleanse for the soul hearing the joy from Canal spill out to the rest of her world, even if it's just for the week.
Some of her friends from school chase down beads and she catches the first twenty minutes or so, trading some candy-looking beads for some opulent ones she was surprised Journey would part with. Underclassmen - rookie mistake! She shared a hit with Kemali and swept the streets for goods on her way back to the pitched polyester tent.[ + 2 beads for moi ]
Her hand strokes the fabric on her way in, the gold detailing rubbing against the thin of her glove like braille telling her affirmations. Mask up, sanitize and hang the beads at the door - Yaya's got a bowl out for any spare necklaces and a separate one under the table for spare dollar's. Separate your golds and your greens, it's good karma. Doctor Puk is in the house, she lights incense and watches it trail out the open flap as she takes her seat, cloth wadded up in her lap.
She takes in the sound of the carnival right outside before turning to listen to the universe, shuffling her commercial deck. How is my night going to go? 78 cards and 1 answer, she pulls and opens one eye to check.z2DKCyQJAJ1-78
9 of Swords? Suffering in success, it does ring a bell. She places it back in the deck and tries to relax her shoulders as she shuffles. It isn't much longer that the first customer comes inside, meeting her in candlelight. Yaya holds up the money bowl as they make it to the table, speaking as they seat themselves, "fortune for a fortune?"
Cough it up! The universe isn't gonna read itself.
