Maze had reluctantly accepted Talon's friendship because he reminded her of home. She shared spaces with addicts and former addicts, watched them quiver and groan from withdrawal only to find themselves back where they started a couple weeks later. She didn't believe there was such thing as an 'easy life' in Twelve, even for those with money. Drug dealers were common. Drugs were common. Suffering was common, and although Talon was probably more of a hindrance than a help, she chose to stay with him.
The two of them scavenged for weapons on their way out of the confusion. Maze remembered punching someone in the eye, and tributes kicking the crap out of Talon. Better to leave now and avoid broken bones. Cannons confirmed her suspicion that fists would be enough to break skulls; it wasn't uncommon to see anymore. Raw strength manifested in mysterious ways when people were desperate.
A little hiccup in their step did not stop Maze from making their great escape. For a moment, she didn't understand how Talon managed to step in a rusted bear trap. She kicked it until it fell apart, and linked her arm with his again. When she looked up at him, his eyes were unfocused and his pupils were blown.
Ah. He was high.
"Just a little further."
He was a burden, but he was her burden to bear. She would not go back on her word over a couple of pills.
Another minute passed of dragging their feet through the sand. She found a piece of junk to sit on, and dropped her supplies into her lap. She hadn't found much; there was a book, a hunk of metal, and a knife. The book was a manual of some sort, "Mech-anics For Dummies, Vol. 1." She didn't yet understand what it was for, or why she might need it.
She stared at the Cornucopia from a distance. It looked like Charlotte was still there, fist fighting like the bone-thirsty career she was. Maze sighed. "I'm going to read this. Tell me if Lottie or Kiibo start coming this way."
