I usually only went over to Bear's house when Hermes went with me. Not because I didn't like Bear or his Ma. And most of his siblings were pretty nice, most of them. But then there was Choal. Choal was in my class, and he wasn't very nice. Before we were old enough to go to school, we've always lived next to each other. And we would all play together. But he always liked teasing me and picking on me. And then when we started going to school it got even worse because I had to deal with him at school and at home, lots of the time we all even walk to school together.
Hermes has talked to him a few times, told him to knock it off. But unless he sees it happening he can't do much 'bout it. And now Hermes has been gone for a few weeks for that show. It just started today but they had to get him ready for it they said. I really miss him, he's just the best big brother in the world. But today with the show, I could barely even watch it. He even looked different. His hair, his skin, all of it. They cleaned him up so much he almost looked like a tribute. I think one of the promos had him wearing makeup. It was weird.
It wasn't my brother though.
And the episode was just him kissing a bunch of people. I had to turn it off pretty much right away. Which hurt because I really wanted to see Hermes. I know he told me that he had to do the show, that we needed the money to get out of the Seam. But I don't get why he wants to leave so bad. Bear lives here. All my friends live here. We have a lot of pretty flowers that grow in the yard in the summer time and berry bushes nearby. I don't get what's wrong with our cute little house in the Seam. He said something about Ma but stopped himself. I don't get that either, Ma likes living in the Seam.
Since I couldn't see Hermes, Bear was the next best thing. And maybe when Hermes got back he could talk some sense into him too.
I went to Bears house and gave a knock to the wood. I announced myself as I did so, "It's me!" I don't know if they have the rule, but a lot of families around here have a rule. You don't answer the door if you don't know if it's a Peacekeeper. At my house if we think there's an inkling of a chance that it might be a Peacekeeper Hermes and I are supposed to hide while Ma or Pa answers the door. If Ma and Pa aren't home we're just supposed to be silent and hide until whoever it is goes away. I think people might be too hard on judging Peacekeepers sometimes, not all of them are bad like the ones that hurt Hermes, right? I want to think some of them are good at least.
When the door opened I worried for a second it might be Choal, but luckily it was Bear, "Bear can we talk? I'm really missing Hermes..."
