After the pain in my foot had begun to die down enough I could finally sleep, I was woken up for my turn to watch. I jolted awake and instantly grabbed for the folding knife before I realised what was happening. I let out a yawn once my adrenaline died down, "Careful Ellis, I about stabbed you in the ankle." As I moved to a better position to take watch I was careful not to bump into Esther - she needed all the rest she could get. If she was even sleeping, I know my own dreams were haunted with visions of Celeste. Soon into my shift I noticed some rustling. I grabbed the net from Ellis's supplies and tried to catch whatever was hiding in the net. Maybe it wasn't the best to try to do this with a broken foot, but I didn't know what it was. For all I knew it could be harmful, but if it was just some squirrel I didn't want to wake everyone up over it.

The bad news is I missed the animal, the good news is it was literally the cutest thing in the world. I had seen koalas before in previous games. But this was different, it had pastel blue fur and glittering eyes. It didn't seem aggressive, just a little bit scared. So instead of lunging at it I gently called it over like Gabriel did with it's cat, making a little pspsps noise as I crouched down and held out my hand to it. Maybe I should spend my time trying to do something more useful, but I could use a friend here. And maybe if I won I could get this thing out of here. I really don't want to know what the capitol does with extra mutts. And I didn't want to traumatise the poor thing. It had to come to me willingly. I didn't mind taking an extra long shift tonight if it meant befriending this damn thing. I mean- look at it!

"Pspspsps here kitty kitty- I mean koala thingy. Pspspsps..."

It started slowly coming over to me, but it gently bumped my hand and then ran back away again. Hey, at least it was a start. I moved slowly, partially to avoid waking up my companions and partially to avoid spooking the poor animal away. I searched through my bag for any sort of peace offering to offer it, but I couldn't find anything that seemed tempting. Damn. What did blue koalas even like? Maybe I could talk to it? Some mutts had like super high intelligence due to the mutations so maybe this one did too.

I slowly went back over it and crouched down, speaking softly like one might speak to a puppy or a baby, "Hi little fella- girl- bear. It's okay, I won't hurt you I promise. I just want to be friends." Once again I slowly stuck out my hand towards it, leaving enough space that it was the animals choice on whether or not it wanted to come check me out or not.

The mutt just stared at me when I talked to it without a single thought behind it's eyes - I'm pretty sure they don't have advanced intelligence and it has no idea what I just said to it. That's when I got another idea. One of my cans of glow-in-the-dark spray paint had a tiny bit of juice left in it. Maybe I could lure it in with the pretty colors? The paint that was left was a neon pink. I wasn't sure what I was saving it for, but it was worth a shot.

I painted a line from as close as I could get to the mutt to about four feet away, the hot pink lighting up. I hope maybe the colors might attract it. I was honestly just starting to run out of ideas at this point. But I already spent way too much time and energy trying to make this thing my friend - wow it's almost like middle school again. I couldn't give up now. I threw in a pspsps for good measure.

It inched closer to me again and this time sniffed my hand for a moment. It gently licked my fingers, but that tickled and I let out a chuckle. The sudden noise seemed to scare it and it backed back up, but it didn't run very far or fast. At this point it appeared more skittish rather than scared. I could work with that. At least I wasn't completely giving up hope yet. I really hoped there was something else going on more interesting somewhere else at the arena tonight - I don't need a koala outsmarting me to be broadcast all over Panem. At least hardly anyone is awake to see it, right?

I slowly got up again and tried to brainstorm another idea. And then I found something - some eucalyptus leaves on the ground. They must have blown away in the wind from some other area in the arena since I didn't see anything else really around they could have come from. Maybe today was my lucky day. Well, as lucky as you can get in the Hunger Games that is. I slowly approached the animal this time and crouched down, holding out the leaves and letting out yet another pspspsps.

The eucalyptus leaves seemed to help a bit! We were finally getting somewhere! The mutt came close - slowly. And then took a small nibble of one of the leaves. It took a few steps back after, but didn't run away. It still looked a bit nervous for sure, but that was progress. Bribery works in the animal kingdom too I suppose. I shifted my hand so it was on the ground with the palm facing up, the leaves in the palm. Maybe if it took and ate a full leaf or too it might realise that I'm a friend.

I spoke softly to it, calmly trying to lure it in, "Hey it's okay... you want some leaves little buddy? You can take some, go ahead." It was just getting sad at this point. One thing was for certain, Ripred had a sense of humor. It should not be this hard to get a koala I feel like.
