[Please take your seats]

Whiplash Gamble steps into the sunset with wounded pride hanging from his shoulders in black and blue, white-knuckling the netting he'd stolen from the belly of the beast, glancing down at the cloud of dust and dirt his footsteps kick up into the dead heat. Calloused, dirty fingers bend and curl against the rope, weaving it in between his knuckles and feeling it burn against the soft flesh of his palm.

Stop, drag his feet and feel his muscles slow to a crawl as he locks eyes on the prize, licks his lips and narrows his gaze and feels the spotlight settle onto his flesh.

He looks into the eyes of a mutt a quarter his size, staring daggers into its form and watches lifeless eyes stare back.

[Staredown . Showdown]

The audience above grows silent, drones whirring into the void with red eyes trained on his little show. Head shifts and spit, yellow and green with phlegm pulled from the back of his throat, shoots out from between his lips and splatters the ground below, the venom of a snake coiled and ready to strike.

Fangs bared, muscles tense, eyes on the prize and the prize on his mind. Then, with all the theatric flair of a boy forever forced to dance and decay,

he strikes.

[Curtains close, spotlight flickers]

[Curtains open -
- Whiplash stands in superiority]

There's a rumblin' goin' down in the makeshift bag he's bent the tarp into, a dancing jumble of blues as he drags it along the ground. The mutt hadn't gone down without a fight, all thrashing limbs and fear in the eyes and screamin' bloody murder. He'd slammed the bag twice into the ground, until the mutt had gone quietly into what he'd assumed was a forever night.

Now, though, he peers gently into the bag as the tiny little thing sits gently, not a thought behind the eyes except for why it's now encased in a thin blue tarp. "Tough lil fucker'" Whiplash remarks, chewing on the decision to kill it now or later. Instead, the arena answers for him.

Spotlight settles on a noise to his left, then to his rat, spins on his heels and watches the cutest little thing scurry by him, kickin' up dust and fury into the setting sunset. Whiplash smirks, all yellowed tooth grin and twists his neck, hearing the familiar crack of popped joints. Net in hand, footsteps soft against the sands of the ground, he cloaks himself in silence and floats into the little thing's blind spot, net still in hand and star-eyed koala watching from inside the tarp.

It's an encore no one asked for but everyone can enjoy, a boy and a net and a bunny that doesn't know what's comin' for it. When the wind in the air finally picks up, carrying tumbleweeds across the horizon in the distance, he jumps.

[Ahem - Sorry for the interruption]

[Technical difficulties, folks]

Swing 'n a miss, he dives forward with net in hand and eats a three course meal of dust dirt and grime, coughing into the plume of sand as the rabbit sprints away from him and towards the bushes to his left. His fingertips carve shallow graves into the ground as they tighten into a fist, imprinted lines left in the ground as he rises to his feet and dusts himself off, teeth grinding into one another and gaze sweeping from the ground towards the bushes. His time in the troupe had made a man outta him far too young, all sleepless nights and standing underneath the spotlight until it branded him nothing more than what he could give them.

Now, he stands watching some sick attempt at a bunny lose its once intent focus on him, turning away towards the sounds of clanking metal hitting against itself in the wind. The troupe had made a man out of him, and the bunny had made an enemy outta him too.

Furrowed brow, tightened fist, footsteps a little less silent this time around because he knows the poor thing is already distracted. Whiplash Gamble is a performer first and person second, always has been and always will be, no matter how much he wishes it weren't true. It's why he leaps with a little more conviction, born out of the frustration and brought into the world for nothing more than entertainment.

[Final Act]

[But there's always an encore]

Shake and rattle, the bush arcs to one side as he swings the net through it, little fucker hardly managing to doge the trap before it slams into the things location. Whiplash grumbles, a string of obscenities slip from his lips in the ensuing frustration, vile enough for the drone above to shift its camera from a close up of his face to the bush down below as he pulls the netting from it.

The thing sprints left, then right, chaos following in its footsteps before it corners itself inside one of the nearby trailers, the sound of thumping echoing against the steel walls, followed by the sound of him stepping in after it. A whistle note, high and shrill, is cast into the air as hazel eyes scan the shadows, finally taking note of the poor thing cowering in the corner, a single sweep of the makeshift trap in his hands and he's launching it at the rabbit.

[The encore]

The mutt darts out of the way at the last moment, letting out a screech as the net comes towards it and slamming into the wall opposite. Whiplash follows suit with his own growl, guttural and annoyed and everything in between as he twists on his heels and lunges at the mutt, fangs bared and frustration running through his veins.

It's a fake-out, catching himself before he falls into the rabbit and muscles firing off one after another. He breathes out one quick breath, eyes catching the pattern of movement that the mutt would take to have gotten away from his first attack. He tosses the tarp with the koala into the rabbit's path, the thing scurrying backwards to stop itself from hitting it. Whiplash strikes in that moment, when the rabbit is trying to assess its surroundings and figure a way out. Predator to prey, the net comes down with a swing of his arm.
