The Bat Cloud
(Pack of Sabertooth Bats)

The Bat Cloud emerged from their slumber, and realized just how hungry they were. They flapped their wings, the sound of them beating likely about to be suddenly apparent to the tributes they were approaching. The tributes looked to be the perfect target: the perfect prey for them to indulge in. So, they got closer and closer before diving toward them, fangs bared.

I want to take the night shift, but really by the time I’ve figured out my desires the day is breaking into some sudden and still silence that I cannot bear unconscious. We were certain this would happen, after all, the inevitable fracturing of our bodies into object and shadow, distortion a daily task we carry out with waking.

But it’s the silence that I can’t take.

[ Pulled awake more so by the quiet that settles stiffly over their makeshift camp than the sun, Izzy pulls herself from the ground, the spot where she passed the night staring into Bowie’s spine and shoulders, and moves quietly to sit beside Isaac, once more resigned to the earliest hours, those strained and inhuman. He’s alert, but on the tail end of it, and so he startles when Izzy lays her hand on his shoulder and nods, expecting the exchange to go silently. ]

You’re something fearless, he says, and I feel my ribs pulse, as though they could shake themselves free from what restrains them and knock carelessly against each other. There’s nothing in me of this, and I can only shake my head, though I feel it so slight I’m unsure whether Isaac catches the answer at all. Perhaps he does, or doesn’t, the next words from him indifferent to the logic of what’s come before, Well, if nothing else, you’re unique. I can bring myself to smile at this.

[ And they sit like that for a while, shoulder to shoulder facing east, or what must be east, at least for today. Izzy hums out the low notes of a song she couldn’t name and thus perhaps shouldn’t say she knows but will, eventually, when she asks for the same notes to be hummed in the same order when she’s nearly dead, but not quite. ]

We’re lucky today, you know? But the quizzical look Isaac shoots me in response tells me he doesn’t know, and we seem stuck in these circles of knowing and unknowing, each finding their way to the high ground and failing to check that the other has come along. If I slow myself, I know I can bring him to the precipice on which I now stand.

I always thought we were guaranteed sunrise, if nothing else, I begin, and I see him sure in the maxim as well, but I remember reading this book about how there’s nothing about it that’s certain. All we have is history. The sun rose yesterday, and the day before that, so our logic says it must rise tomorrow.

And we’re watching tomorrow now, the day that will rise high above us and set at our backs, should we not get turned around in the meantime. But history isn’t a guarantee, and it’s reckless of us to base our lives on it.

[ Izzy can’t quite read his expression, though she stares directly and unyieldingly at Isaac until he meets her gaze. Perhaps she wants to be thought now as fearless, since the boy has planted the seed in her head, but she knows that she wasn’t then and will likely never be, even if this knowing remains without language and guttural. ]

~

My mom told me this story once about a boy who used to wake late in the day—high noon, even—and his father always scolded him for not being present to greet the morning. I think of how few mornings I’ve spent away from the life I’ve always known and how distant they already seem, as if that life is just another recollection of something I’ve wanted always to experience and know I never will.

So the boy decides to change his life, right? And he wakes up early, so fucking early that it’s still pitch black outside, and he crawls through the brambles and barbed wire and eventually makes it to the place he knows his father has sat, day after day, and watched dawn break.

And he sits there.

He waits; he’s patient, as good people are.

And for the first time in the course of human history, the sun doesn’t rise.

[ Izzy turns then to look at Isaac, to see what the boy might make of the story she’s turned over and over again, desperate to make something of what it means to begin or end, and if time can really do anything with it at all, or cares to. He’s just about to say something when the bats drop on top of them, Isaac throwing his body across her just in time to keep the fang sunk deep in his own flesh, the other grazing only lightly against her thigh. He shoves her hard in the direction of her mech, and she shakes her head frantically at him, says no over and over but he doesn’t hear her, or doesn’t acknowledge it, and shoves her inside. ]

In here, there’s silence but it’s the wrong kind, not the pure silence of the morning, disconcerting as it was, but something muddled and bastardized, the barrier of quiet you know should be broken by the world around you but for one reason or another, is not. I see Bowie, his upper arm lashed and punctured, and Kareem, eyes wild in sudden fear.

And I’m in here, and I’m not me.

As the tributes are struck by the Bat Cloud, they retaliate. The Bat Cloud is cut and bruised by the enemy, only one of the weapons deflected. Clearly, these tributes don't want to just give up and become food. Then again, who would expect them to? It's a survival instinct. No one really wants to become food, right? The Bat Cloud understood that much. At this point, they could end up fighting for more than just food: they could end up fighting to survive if they took too many hits. So, they swarmed the tributes again, food and survival as their motivation.

When more pain comes to the Bat Cloud, they let out a collective screech. It's loud and unpleasant to hear for anyone who might be listening: the tributes likely wouldn't be too fond of the sound. The bats are starting to feel themselves falter, failing to carry out their hunt that they'd been so set on going through with. Their fangs are still at the ready, though. They're not planning on just giving up quite yet.
