This place was peaceful, at first at least.
I hadn't seen any mutts and the tribute I had seen - Orville - agreed not to fight. Which with how rough he looked was probably more to his benefit than my own. I felt bad for him, he looked like he was in so much pain. I had a soft spot for him, how could you not? He was a sweet kid with those big doe eyes. Ever since I helped him in the Training Center I had that soft spot.
And he seemed to trust me.
I probably could have killed him and he wouldn't have had been able to stop it. But I didn't - I wasn't a traitor. But I knew Ellis wouldn't see it the same way as me. He obviously didn't understand, just like when he wanted to eat Coconut. I thought no one had seen Orville and I. Maybe if they had I could convince them not to tell Ellis, but it was Ellis who saw.
I was trying to collect plants from the area when Ellis's voice called out and I froze, "I knew there was something off about you."
I instantly panicked, nearly certain I knew what he was referring to. But I pretended nor to, maybe I'd luck out and he was talking about something else or joking around. But anger was visible on his featured and I had a feeling I was screwed. And he confirmed that instinct before I even had time to ask a follow-up question, "Why the fuck were you helping him? It's a fight to the death, Peter, and that didn't look much like dying to me."
Knowing Ellis I had a feeling that talking things out wouldn't be an option. I wasn't in my mech, but I also wasn't scared of him. I set the plants I was collecting to the side so they didn't get stepped on, "Look I was just trying to check on Orville. Maybe that's a bad idea, but look how bad of shape he's in after only a couple of days. He's like a harmless little flower."
As much as I didn't want to fight, I tried to intimidate him if I could. I got closer and stood up as tall as I could, tensing my arm muscles slightly so they were more prominent. I didn't like threatening people, including Ellis. I actually thought Ellis was kind of cute when we met, especially with that night we had in the Training Center. But if intimidating him is what it took to avoid a Bloodbath, I'd do it, "Think logically about this before you do anything, Ellis."
