Orville had passed the previous evening by adorning his suit. The riveting kit had included baisc instructions and after a few trial and error attempts on the thigh plates of his Mantis mech suit he'd gotten the hang of it. He'd taped up the gaping hole on his chest and then riveted a halo around it. He'd stuck out his chest as much as he could to get a glimpse of it. In his mind it looked badass, like a circular badge. Like he wasn't just oozing blood and something vaguely pus-like out of his slowly beating heart.
It wasn't until he fell into the Oasis with the reflective pools that he got a good look at his handiwork. In the ripples of a pond Orville stared at the reflection. It wasn't just the nailheads, or the bulky suit, or the patched hole. It was him, his face, a little more angular, a lot sandier, and a little happier.
He smiled, a few gritty teeth showing.
"Let's keep going," he said to his reflection. He grabbed hold of a cottonwood tree's branch, slipping along the edge of the pond. He very nearly slid into the water, which he couldn't imagine would be good for his suit. On the far side, proud of his agility, Orville paused to gather his breath.
And found himself presented with a little stranger.
For a second he lifted his axe-wielding arm. But it was apparent, even in the span of a breath, that the muttation meant him no harm. He lowered his weapon and then bent to one creaky knee. "You lost, little fella?"
Orville smiled.
And then he lunged.
Because any mutts that weren't trying to kill him were probably edible. And suddenly he realized he was very, very hungry. The Kodoma simply side stepped him. It was surprisingly nimble considering it looked to be made of stone and moss. With a little indignant sniff, it shook itself from head to toe, and then seemed to fade into the cave walls themselves.
Orville stared at the pile of moss it had left behind, his stomach rumbling.
Grimacing, he gathered up the dewy offering and stuffed it into his hatch. He would not be eating that unless absolutely necessary. With his stomach demanding his attention, he needed a distraction. So once again he brought out the riveting kit. He fiddled with the settings as he walked, trying to decide if it too could be weaponized, when he accidentally fired it.
Right into the back of his left hand. "SON OF A GAMEMAKER!" He wailed, flapping his hand about. It stung and the decorative nail head was embedded between two thin bones, and it stung. He danced, his mech suit creaking, backing towards the pond. He was almost at the water's edge when he realized he was being watched.
"Yeah, I meant to do that!" He huffed at the lurking shadow.
