I wished that Ellis and I got along better.

Just in general.

I don't know why everything always went to shit between the two of us, even if I tried. I felt like he was trying too, for the sake of the alliance. I wanted to believe he was trying, just like I wanted to believe we wouldn't cause each other's deaths. But at this rate, it wasn't looking good. Everything that could go wrong, would go wrong, and at the worst possible moment.

I don't know who more was to blame, but we needed to figure out a solution. I needed something to do that was somewhat productive while I tried to figure everything out. And that's when I noticed fish jumping in the stream. Or as I saw it, a peace offering for Ellis to make up for him to not being able to eat Coconut.

Almost as soon as I cast the net into the water, fish were in it. That... that was not how I was planning for that to go. But I couldn't head back to camp yet. I needed to get the situation with Ellis figured out first. So I packed up my shit and went for a walk. I didn't have my mech on me, but everyone I had seen so far had been mostly harmless. And if not I'm pretty sure I could run faster than someone in a mech regardless.

I hoped I did.

As I walked along the river, I thought of Ellis. The river was so soft and peaceful, would Ellis ever have the chance to know that type of peace? He was entropy incarnate. Entropy is a scientific term, it's the amount of dysfunction or randomness in a particular system. And one of the laws of thermodynamics is that entropy can neither be created nor destroyed. Entropy and energy. Two opposites, two opposites with that one commonality. Neither will ever be created or destroyed, merely transferring or changing form.

I felt bad for Ellis.

I began to realise just how thirsty I was, so I finally caved and drank some water.

Someone doesn't get to be as turbulent as Ellis on his own.

There has to be some sort of outside factor that brought that chaos and destruction to his life. Even before today, he didn't trust me when I wiped some whipped cream off of his face in the training center. We had stayed up, talking about life and the universe and everything. I... I thought he was pretty cute. And apparently he thought I was straight. Which, I've heard before.

I wanted to find a way to help District Twelve if I made it through this. All of the lower districts. The stories I've heard and seen about those places were heart broken. But after knowing Celeste and Ellis, they were heart shattering. I wanted to believe the good in the world. But look at those two. Their entire lives seem to be shaped by the horrors those districts suffer through. There has to be a better.

I sat down for a moment and set Coconut on the ground. I needed to think before I got too far from camp. And that's when she went and started drinking the water from the river, and I realised it must be clean.

I needed to head back, before Ellis started telling everyone I was a traitor.

I got up, picking Coconut back up and following the river up stream. I wished Celeste was here. I know she'd believe me, that I'm not betraying them for Orville. I just wanted to help him, that's it. He's like... he's like a deer in the headlights. And he looked so hurt when I saw him I had to do something to help him. I couldn't just let him be in pain and suffer, that wasn't who I was.

She'd know I was telling the truth, because Celeste would've done the same thing.

Orville was dead the moment he stepped into the arena. They killed him when he walked up onto that stage. He wasn't a victor. He almost died in the training center if I didn't step in. And maybe that would have been less cruel that making him suffer through this. But him staying alive for as long as possible would help give the people who cared about him hope. Hope for the future. I wouldn't want my family to have their lives ruined by my death, so I hoped his family's lives wouldn't be ruined either. Some people were just meant to die in here, and so they were killed the moment their names were uttered.

Though one question remained:

Did they kill me already?
