The heat is unrelentless despite the sand covering the sun, and it's hard to even think. Sweat is less and less, and it's been several hours since he found some place to relieve himself because the need just isn't there. A parched tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth, and adrenaline is barely keeping him going, and Canvas knows that he needs to find some water soon before it's too late.
Maybe it is too late though.
His stomach twists into knots, and it's hard to stand on his own two feet. Every fiber begs for a chance to lay down and rest, but he knows deep inside that resting is dangerous in a place like this. Who knows, maybe another vine could lash out at them for intruding upon their habitat. Everything here is living even when their time comes to an end, their soul carries on clinging to someone else until only one remains and it carries twenty-three individuals with it forever.
But he moves forward away from the now quivering vine as it retreats into a place of rest until someone else comes trotting through.
That's when he sees it, a water pump sitting in the distance. A large grin spreads across his face, but it doesn't last too long because cracked lips split open even wider.
Ouch.
Some Chapstick would be nice, but even back home he doesn't even have that.
"Sven, look!" He cries out as he places his squirt bottle under the pump and starts filling it up with water. Death won't come today, but it could always come later. It's just a matter of believing. Once his bottle is full, he removes the tablets from his bag and drops one inside, and then he waits knowing it has to start working and taking effect before safely drinking.
The dying spark flourishes again, and this time Canvas knows keeping hope alive is important. He's a hope after all, and maybe that's all that's needed to survive this horrible place. Right now he has a friend, if that's the proper word for it, but soon no friends will matter in a place where only one heart will thump at the end.
Only one will break free of the entrapment. Is it worth having a friend?
Yes.
Always.
