Parker Lachlan is liar. She doesn't mean to be, it's apparent in the way she's so frustratingly thorough trying to save him. Worry creasing her brows, or maybe it's frustration he's convinced himself is something sweeter. No one is invincible, Wes. Parker says, in spite of the way their hearts still beat. Weak fingers familiarize themselves with the muscles tensing in her forearms as she sews him back together, he grins up at her even when she's not looking at him. "You're wrong, y'know?" The words slip out on a feeble tongue before he can even attempt to swallow them.
"I feel invincible." There's nothing left in his hollow lungs. They rise and fall in desperate gasps. He's bled out on the floor and still keeps breathing. He takes satisfaction in how stubborn he's being. A petulant child convinced they know better. He tries to frown at Parker, contorting his features and pushing himself past the point of exhaustion. "You make me feel invincible."
Maybe it's because he's a coward, or maybe it's because of the blood loss but he doesn't remember what happens after that. It all goes fuzzy. The light hurts his eyes, filling with haloes. It's not quite death but he gets to know her a little better that day. She's cold and empty, she won't be kind to Wes when they meet and he wouldn't have it any other way.
The Oasis is something of a fever dream. It's hard to tell if that's because he's still delirious or if it's truly as close to a miracle as he's ever come. They're back in their mechs, a wall of rotten metal placed solidly between them but Wes is still tries to catch sight of Parker's expression the minute they enter.
If he were a cautious man it might scare him how quickly she has become his first thought. It's become instinctual to seek her out. "I'm tired." His throat is dry, his hands are shaking. Bimbo pressed her cheek against his, stubborn in their acknowledgement of his weakness.
His smile is bashful, he runs his hands over hair slick with sweat and blood. He slips out of Recluse and into the soft grass below. "You go on ahead, I'll wait here."
It's peaceful, after all.
It's nice to remember what that's like.
