Wide eyes dart across the pages of the book the butterfly led him to. It's interesting, and Canvas wants to learn the ins and outs of what this game is, and maybe once he makes it home, he can set it up for all his family.
If he makes it home.
Deaths are slowly trickling in, and he knows that a storm is brewing. He's seen it before, a slow beginning leads to a different sort of bloodbath where the gamemakers force everyone together. It's only a matter of time. But right now he can't think of that. Anticipation leads to anxiety and depression, and it's a vicious cycle to escape. Just live in the moment and take it all in. The end is still so far away.
How many have even died?
The book falls from his hands, and he quickly jumps to his feet after loud explosions ring through the air. A frantic heart leaps into his chest, but everything relaxes when he turns towards the sky. It's hard to see, but what little he makes out is beautiful nonetheless, and he can't help the grin that grows even larger.
Closing his eyes, he drifts to sleep, but it feels like it doesn't last long.
"Good morning losers!"
Canvas looks around unsure of what to even think as the announcement carries on. It's clear the person speaking is angry and goes as far as to put a bounty on a couple of people's head. For a moment, he's happy it's not him. He hasn't even seen anyone to fight yet. He shakes his head and gathers his belongings and starts moving on.
Betrayal is part of the games. This is a selfish game when it comes down to it. It's all about getting further ahead, so why feel such anger towards someone betraying?
After what feels like forever, he makes his way through a passage, and Canvas looks at the change in scenery. It went from something beautiful to something deserted. Something flat and ugly. So much sand everywhere. No water. Nothing. It's a hopeless situation, and for a moment, the flame starts to flicker and dim. There's really nothing here, no way out. Of course he knows the only escape is to kill everyone standing in his way. It's hard though.
There has to be something here right?
This isn't just some sort of trap to keep them outside the arena from finding anything?
They wouldn't do that, right?
It doesn't matter what this is. It doesn't matter what they try to do because they're under the control of the higher ups, and even thinking of doing something stupid isn't a good idea. Nothing is a good idea.
Looking up, he spots these weird machines half buried in the sand.
"Sven, what are these?" He asks carefully as he slowly moves towards them. Nothing in the arena is trustworthy, especially something that's half buried in the sand, yet he still climbs into it anyway. So many buttons to press, and without knowing what each one does, this becomes even more dangerous.
Surely there's a manual somewhere.
But finding it is a different story.
Soon the machine bursts to life causing Canvas to jump off back into the sand below. Whatever this is, it's really cool. Pulling ropes in different directions, the tattered sails begin to raise.
"Let's take it for a ride."
He doesn't really give Sven much of an option. Either he can come on the machine and take it for a ride, or he can stay behind, and Canvas will return after having some fun and exploring. It's really up to him.
"If you want to that is."
Of course it's easier said than done because he's unsure of which button does what or how the sails even work. This is beyond his area of expertise, but he has to try. Pressing another button, the machine starts moving forward. And with a bit of finagling, it starts moving the way he wants it to, and he hesitates a little.
And then he sees other landships moving.
"Sven, we gotta go." He whispers quietly before pressing different buttons on the machine to make it move forward, and then he moves back to the sails, and to the engine because he wants to see how far behind those other machines are. Seeing that they're close, he runs back to the front and starts pressing more buttons. Cables fall, wires start sparking.
What is this?
He runs back to the back of the ship, and they're closing in, and he starts pressing different buttons on the mechsuit trying to get away. Maybe this thing can fly?
And then a cannon fires before he can stop it, and he falls down to his stomach unsure of what to do, but he keeps watching as it lands. Grimacing, he turns towards Sven.
A war has just begun, and this time it's his fault. Maybe he can survive and get away before any fatalities.
