Cannons echo through the air along with the cracking of sails as they collapse on the ships. Smoke rises making it seem even hotter than it already is. Canvas turns towards Sven unsure of what to do. It's like everything's about to explode. A weird squealing noise pulsates from the panel as sparks continue flying from the wires. Being from district eight is a downfall cause he knows nothing about this ship, but he's smart enough to know when it's time to leave.
Escaping this war, running like a coward, yeah that's all he is, yet this isn't the time to try to become a hero. People must die if there's ever a chance of making it home alive, and this is something he knows. Even Sven must perish if Canvas wants to ever walk in district eight again. Of course everyone will return home, but most of them won't be alive.
It's hard to even figure out what to do, and the pages of the manual seem to drift from his mind despite spending several nights looking through it trying to make sure that everything is in order. This mech-suit is important, yet it's cracking and falling apart, and maybe it'll die before too long.
So many different buttons line the machine, and each time Canvas thinks he's found the right one, something else happens. Something against his will, and it's hard to focus on the task at hand while trying to dodge the shrapnel flying towards him, and that's when he finds it.
"Sven, come on, let's get out of here." There's a sense of urgency in his voice. His friend isn't looking very well off, and right now Canvas just wants them both to make it out of here to survive one last day. Just one more sunrise, that's all he needs, but is it enough? Will it help him succeed? The other option is leaving his friend behind to succumb to the war raging around him.
No.
I can't.
He caused this. This is his fault, and he won't leave his friend behind if he has any say in it.
Pressing the button, the rockets spring to life, and he's flying into the air before he even realizes what's happening, and everything moves so fast. It's all so quick, and looking around, he's unsure of where to go, but away from there. A coward runs, and that's exactly what he's doing. Surviving another day is important. Making it out of this mess alive. Figuring out some way to prove that he can live just one more day.
Not that it matters anyway.
Soaring faster and faster, the world around him becomes a blur, and moving becomes increasingly difficult. At least the wind from the speed offers a little bit of relief from the scorching heat searing his skin.
And then he lands, and it's hard to stay on his feet, and he tumbles slightly landing face first on the ground.
It's better than the desert he was in just moments before, yet his eyes lock onto the prison cells. Something bad happened here, and Canvas knows it wouldn't take long for something to find him, to track him down. Rubble and broken pieces of brick cover the road and ground, and trash scurries across the ground.
Every hair stands on end.
The only difference between here and the badlands is the number of places to hide if something tries lurking in the shadows. Mutts likely know this place better than him, but for now, it's a place to hide, a place to rest before the sunrises tomorrow.
It's just his hope that his friend followed.
