The now-trademark Coliseum stands as tall and imposing as it had for the five years prior - a prime example of antique yet thoroughly modern architecture, stained with the blood of five years' worth of Capitolite sacrifices. Like previous years, the famous Hunger Games arena is imposing to behold, its sands and towering walls dwarfing anyone - or anything - that might find its way in the midst.
This year sees a return to the more traditional style used for the Second through the Fourth, as there is no flooded makeshift lake, nor are there any train cars set up to traverse the circumference in seconds. What there is is a new architectural marvel of its own - namely, a perpendicular intersection of twenty foot walls painted obsidian black, towering above the tributes and dividing the arena into four equally sized sections. Hanging on each of the walls are a set of five banners - three plastered with an individual tribute's portrait blown up to gargantuan sizes, and two more with a solid color - red, blue, yellow, and green - for a total of ten banners displayed from each section.
And so to are the arena sections divided likewise into the bright colors. Corresponding with each section, so too have the different quadrants of the Coliseum been painted, with each set of seats reflecting their section's color. New this year is the addition of a special VIP section, where everyone from the Gamemakers and several members of the Security Council to individually sequestered Victors sit, side by side, yet separated to ensure their own - and each other's - safety.
The tributes have but a few moments to get their bearings, figure out who they have been sequestered with - are the pairings random, or is there a method behind the seemingly arbitrarily constructed madness? - before a gong sounds. After seven years, it should be all but obvious what that signal should represent.Let the 7th Annual Hunger Games begin!
