she would have given anything to born in six or three rather than eight. hollian was never one for pride, but she had known since childhood that she was not cut out for district eight's industry. she was smart — extraordinarily so. always so far ahead of her classmates and never allowed to achieve anything more than she already had, it was agonizing. she was meant to be a medic, or a scientist, so she started working at a small medical center to ease her boredom. it didn't. logic games enticed her, but cigarettes and drinking did even more. during her lunch break at school, she plays strategy board games and has a smoke. most of her classmates liked her, and so she would teach them how to play. sometimes they would even bring their own new games for them to play. her greatest influence on the other students was the smoking — she knows that in twenty or forty years or so she might hack up a lung, but she never planned on living long anyway. not here, not in eight. there would be nothing to do when she was old. and she didn't want a family, as nice as baking cookies for grandchildren sounded. she didn't have the emotional capacity for children. besides, she already resented her parents for bringing her into this world, and she wouldn't repeat the cycle. she'd probably die before she got the chance, anyway.
