Alpha Quinn had intrigued me from the moment I had meet her. She had an energy about her that made me want to gravitate towards her. I mean she was an absolute mess, like seriously, had mum found out that I had aligned myself with the dropkick version of a career, she would have been far from impressed. And already we bickered like a married couple, over petty things, but then like other things such as teaming up with the boy from 10, the one with the mouthful of a name.

I was not a big fan of that.

But then I had reminded myself that Opal Shore had married that Potato guy from Eleven, which was way more embarrassing. And people seemed to still respect her, or pity, I still couldn't quite figure it out. I'd also heard that she was no engaged to another Eleven, that blonde victor that was coronated as the Ice Queen. Scandalous, right? I don't know about you, but I am sensing a pattern.

So that is how I concluded that the temporary arrangement with the district 10 boy might not fully discredit me. It might actually do wonders for my career. I could see it already, 'Cordelia Bardot takes pity on sad boy from Ten, taking them under her wing'. We would be trending, obviously. #notallheroswearcapes

But I wasn't about to walk into the arena ill prepared. I had to have an understanding of just how much dead weight I would have to carry. And how quickly I would have to drop it, maybe even sacrifice it, I do believe the boy would make a lovely meat shield.

"So I hear that we might be working together," I say as I walk up to him, crossing my arms across my chest I give him a quick study. "You better not get me killed."

I sure as hell wasn’t going to get through this alone.

Not because of my will to survive, let’s get that out of the way right now. The fact that I made it to seventeen was a miracle, so you can fuck right off if you didn’t think I could get out of here alive.

I wouldn’t wager your life saving, though.

But it’s mad to go it alone when there are still twenty-three other kids breathing down your neck. And the added loneliness of an arena that can pinch at the heart. I’d wind up talking to myself anyway, and how embarrassing would it be if that’s what got me killed? Boy from ten perishes because he was arguing with himself over whether or not a berry was edible! Aside from the grief, my sisters would at least have something to laugh at.

So, when a couple of careers offered their services, I wasn’t about to say no.

“You sound stressed,” I looked up from my spot on the wrestling mats with a grin. She’d caught me dozing after the trainer had given up sparring with me when I couldn’t stop from giggling at the holds he’d been trying to teach me. “Need something to take the edge off?”

I tapped at my pocket and gave a wink.

She gave off the sort of vibe that’d meant business, stab you ten times before you hit the ground and then light the body on fire. A tough nut to crack, but I bet I could manage.

“Why don’t you come over here and sit a spell. Get to know me!” I gave another grin. The reason they’d picked me wasn’t for my repartee or skills. I’d play the human shield until my carcass was rotting in a ditch somewhere. Which meant I could be relatively safe as long as I stayed alive.

And if that didn’t work I was just going to run the fuck away.

“I promise I don’t bite.” I patted the cushion underneath me.
