Every tribute has a breaking point. A moment where their minds push past the point of no return. Pacifists become killers. Killers become monsters. And even the most logical tributes lose all rationale. Saber Bancroft wanted to find these tribute's limits. What more is there to the games than to create stories and find bloodshed to inspire the populace. Panem deserved better storylines and the most thrilling games possible. Saber would make sure they provide. As he stands at the side, a heavy smile pulling at his lips as he calls in the first two into their sparring room.

Kassia Simons from Three had become more of a nuisance than an interesting story. All talk and in a way that's desperate to cause a stir out of him, but Saber Bancroft knew there wouldn't be any interest in a girl who's got their head stuck in a rebellious mindset. The only way to take a mindset like that down is to show how truly weak a girl like her was. Maybe she'll understand not to disrespect those who've got your life in their hands. A smile on his lips as he looks to Alice Ballinger from One. Proper is the one word he'd used to describe a girl like Alice Ballinger. Always putting on an appearance, but he knew she could still be a career worthy of the title. Would the chaotic Kassia from Three prosper or would it be Alice, the proper career from One? Either way he was excited to see how the both of them did.

Stepping forward, he lets his voice ring out. "There will be no second chances in this tournament. First one to knock the other down wins." The taste of excitement fills his chest as he steps back. His words continue to drift through the air. "Feel free to pick any weapon you desire. Medical teams will be waiting." There's a certain uneasy tension that always fills the room before a spar. The feeling was electrifying. "Remember, we're watching. Let the match begin!"

(You each have 25hp. You can choose any weapon you'd like, they are wooden to avoid serious injury. Instas are 10 damage. If any issues come up ic, Saber and trainers will step in! Remember this is about writing a fun narrative, so have fun with it! Good luck! pup gamemaker tallis 🧚🏽‍♂️kaitlin.)

The other tributes who had signed up for the sparring matches were getting ready as the first match was preparing to commence. Kassia wondered if her relentless poking at Saber is why he was making her go first, to get back at her at some small way even if he appeared indifferent on the outside. She hated going first at anything, especially things she wasn't good at. Fighting was definitely not her strong suit.

Still, she decided it would be best to not show how nervous she was. Stopping herself from biting her lip, she took a deep breath and walked into the tournament's center. Looking at Saber, she waves, "Hey, Knife! Nice to see you again."

He had set her against Alice Ballinger. Another one of those effortlessly stunning careers from district one. Kassia hadn't had the chance to meet her yet, but she had Alice marked down in the Don't Run Into In the Arena section of her notebook. After watching the reaping recap and seeing her perfect smile next to Cordelia's in response to being reaped, Kassia felt shivers of fear. Saber definitely designed this to force her into discomfort.

Walking over to the table with the set of weapons, Kassia surveyed the assortment of diabolic devices given to them. After immediately ruling out anything that would force her to be up close to Alice, she reached for the bow and arrows in the ranged weapons sections.

Despite her wanting to stay as far away from the girl from one as possible, Alice seemingly appeared out of nowhere beside her, also surveying the ranged weapons.

"If we're both going to be slinging stuff at each other from across the arena, you want to have the honors?" Kassia questions, gesturing to the array of weapons.

"Ow," she exclaims, jumping back as Alice's shoe connects with her foot. It didn't seem hard enough to be purposefully meant to hurt her, but it definitely wasn't an accident.

"You first," Alice says, and Kassia struggles to understand if this was Alice's way of messing up her game before they start fighting or if it was just some deranged career humor.

Trying to laugh it off with a small chuckle, Kassia responds, "I mean, if you insist."

Pulling back from the weapons table, she listens to Saber as he goes on his little speech. He said that there were medical teams nearby, but Kassia didn't really see any nearby. Hopefully she wouldn't need it after five minutes of fighting against Alice.

"Let the match begin!"

Kassia takes a deep breath and draws back an arrow to point directly at Alice, "Let's just hope we don't have to do this to each other in a few days, right?" She laughs again, her face heating up with embarrassment with the knowledge that she was about to be beat to a pulp in front of everyone. The bow felt just so stupid in her hands.

However, despite the feelings of incompetence weighing down her mind, she steadies herself once more, straining against the weight of the bow's string, and lets the arrow fly.

ALICE.

Alice remembers the sounds of quiet with abject fondness.

The training center is chaotic, at best, and overwhelming at worst. She hasn't been around this many people free to mingle and be social in, well, years. Before the Ballingers, she went to a backwoods school in One that had hand me down textbooks from 30 years ago. There'd been seventy two kids in the whole school, kindergarten through to the end. And she'd only gone from there to being homeschooled by none other than Portia Ballinger herself for a year. Watched her put bars on her new brothers window, build a cage of metal around the house to try and trap him in. She made Alice's world smaller, piece by wrought iron piece, too, and now Alice doesn't know what to do with all this freedom.

Peter's words keep ringing in her head, rattling around her skull until she feels like running and never stopping. She doesn't know why she signed up for this tournament, really. She'd been done up to play the part of career, but she lacks the practical training. All she has is pointing rubber tip arrows at Peter in the garden for a single summer to go on here. Nails into the palm of her first, she's thinking about him when she walks up to the table and finds Kassia Simons looking at the same weapon.

"You first," she says, poking at the other tribute with her words. Childish, the sort of thing she'd say to Peter. She stomps her foot to match.

Alice snatches the other bow and arrow, trying to hide the way her hands shake as she pulls the quiver over her shoulder and tries to spin out of the way of Kassia's incoming arrow. It slices across the middle of her belly though, and she hisses, pulling her own bow up and letting the arrow loose before even saying anything else.

Her arrow had actually hit it's mark. Sure, it was probably a fluke, a one-off lucky shot. But still, it had struck the career even as she tried to spin away. Kassia could only watch in shock, her eyes wide and her heart thrumming loudly.

So this is what careers felt like when they trained? The rush of endorphins every time they were praised by a strike hitting their target? Maybe Kassia was beginning to understand them and the burst of adrenaline she felt when the arrow actually met its target. She almost laughed, but just as she was starting to regain herself, Alice was aiming for her.

Kassia froze, her mind screaming at her that she needed to move, but she couldn't force her legs to go anywhere. It felt as if the adrenaline mixed with her fear of the career became a bubbling potion of anxiousness, and her legs were barely operable. Just as Alice Ballinger let the arrow loose, Kassia began to turn to run.

What would have been a hit directly to her stomach and would have definitely left a nasty bruise became a scratch along her back. Kassia winces, moving her hand to her back to see if there was any real damage. Nothing was bleeding, but it felt as if her skin was stinging from the blow.

"Following your lead on that one,"

Her hand pressing where the arrow hit her to try to block the pain, she responds with a grimace.

"Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but you could also miss me. That would be nice too, you know."

Taking a deep breath in, she grasps at another bow from her quiver and steadies her arm. Pulling the arrow up to her eye, she aims again, willing herself to not miss this next shot. Breathing out, she unleashes another arrow.
