dad didn't care enough for that.

he only cared enough to keep the accident child and then cared enough again to send him away - first to the nannies, then to the tutors, then to the keepers.

vern dies somewhere in the middle of all that and sal tries to run away but he can't go anywhere because he's thirteen and the fences that choke nine are much taller than him. mourn is an idiot and buck is stupid and the world seems so cruel and so unfair and the only way to rectify that is to trash the study and throw the urn of a great-great someone against the wall.

he sits in the ashes and waits to be found but no one ever comes. his brother's funeral dirge plays outside, smothered by the sound of the too-loud radio and the too-loud music and the too-loud sound of the book spines bending, breaking, burning.

it's cathartic.

and it's kind of a nightmare. two's a nightmare. he gets shoved into a white uniform and put on a train and only throws up once on the way there. there's drills on weekdays and clubs on weeknights and when one of the girls from five falls off the sentry tower and smashes her skull against the ground, life goes on. the barracks are always cold and the recruits gather their socks together to stuff in the crack under the door and to line the spaces between the windows. a boy with blonde hair accidentally shoots himself when he's cleaning his rifle and it takes two days for the rumour to spread that it wasn't an accident. sal sleeps on the top bunk and listens to the wheeze of someone with a bullet lodged under their lung.

after five hundred and sixty-three days The Incident happens.

he's seventeen and gets sent back home with five charges of misconduct and two years of banned travel.

there's a list of things waiting for him:

- two new nephews and a niece.

(he plays the part of worst uncle ever and gives them all toddler-sized pellet guns)

- his father, more sour-faced than usual.

(unsurprising)

- a girl in the parlour, more prim than usual.

(surprising)

- a marriage certificate with a signature he doesn't remember signing.

(they had a wedding while he was gone. his wedding. while he wasn't there. rune tells him later that she stood holding kade in the courthouse and watched a hired forger scrawl out sal's name with too many loops.)

- a baby.

(turns out having a kid out of wedlock is a bigger deal than getting kicked out of the academy. the solution to this is to pretend they were married the whole time.)

he wants to remember rune, but he doesn't. between the ages of fifteen to nineteen he makes too many bad decisions too fast - she's just another on the list. she's stubborn though, and a little scary, and suddenly they're expected to raise children when they're still children themselves.

really, in the end, they grow up together. they exist and they age in the same space, bickering the way roommates do. sal learns that rune's favourite tea is peppermint and then commits to only buying chamomile. rune leaves the window cracked open on summer nights so sal will wake up with mosquito bites on his ass. he finds semi-illegal books to set on her nightstand every tuesday night and she buys him the expensive sort of cologne that can only be imported from one. they talk shit about their families and spike the punches at charity banquets and learn to live without killing each other.

they're friends before lovers and acquaintances before partners. rune hates being called wife, so sal calls her shithead, and then softens it into heart.

in an effort to clean up his son's mess, sal's father does the unthinkable, and he gives him a best friend.

they have three children that they bring up platonically - they teach them how to run and how to swear and how to be the menaces to society that every society needs.

after yale masters going up and down the stairs, sal tucks the kids into bed and then takes rune out to celebrate. they make it halfway to the bar before the leeches show up and ask why adroxis ammunitions moved the north factory operations further inland, away from their territory.

sal doesn't know, because whenever dad or vern or mourn or buck had talked about the business he'd always purposefully tune them out and start making noise.

but that's not a good enough answer, and so they put one bullet through sal's left knee and another through rune's right eye.

the funeral's at the main house. in the garden like all the rest of them. esther and mourn watch the kids while sal sits in the old study and tears apart the books.

he's fine afterwards.

kade is old enough to watch nowles and yale and so sal spends a week on buck's couch and then two months on mourn's. he laughs so easily that it unnerves them. or maybe it doesn't. it doesn't seem to freak anyone else out because he'll crack a joke and then they'll all look at him knowingly, like they're dissecting his face and trying to pull something out.

they walk on eggshells around him for a year. five years. ten.

because the full break never seems to happen. it just keeps looming there, dark and heavy and waiting; the long-awaited sequel to The Incident that never quite gets through. he talks to himself as he walks home, cries at nothing and laughs at everything and loses his temper so fast you'd wonder if he even had one to begin with.

on good days, it's good. but on bad days, it's terrible.

it's

- a nightmare.
