- When all the love around you is dying -
In her thirty-one years of life so far, Joule had never been to another District. Her mother, Catherine Spark, had done some travelling when she was the mayor of District Three, but Joule had never been given the same opportunity. So, getting to be here in District Six was an adventure for her, and she was excited about it.
Not only was Joule in another District, but she was here because of an event that involved one of her most passionate subjects: science. The robot she'd built for the robotics competition was inspired by the one Bolts had built for her when she was a kid. At about twelve years old, she'd received a gift of a simple little firefly robot from her older brother, and they bonded over it. When Bolts was reaped for the Hunger Games, he even took the lightbulb that had gone out from the firefly robot and brought it with him as a token on a string around his neck.
Now, Joule made a bigger and more functional version of the firefly, as a way to remember him. That wasn't her only way of memorializing her siblings she'd lost to the Games, though. She also named a star after them, and if that wasn't special, she wasn't sure what could be.
Dusty had always loved the stars. Joule could remember the two of them sitting outside, looking up at the stars together while Joule helped her identify which ones were which while flipping through Dusty's astronomy book. Joule wondered what ever happened to Dusty's book. Maybe she'd have to ask her mom about it.
Florence had always been a sweetheart, too. Joule missed her so much. She wished they could go back to the days of running around outside together, playing tag and other games, rather than Florence having to have gone into the actual Games.
Joule wanted them all back, but the best she could do was memorialize them, so that's exactly what she did.
