a x e l !
There was a girl outside the train station selling painted seashells - a smart marketing strategy for all the tourists that stumble out of the station and immediately demand to see the beach. But Axel had seen the girl with all her shells laid out on a blanket and panicked. He didn't know if welcome gifts were a standard in Five. Was that a thing people did? Was that normal?
Is it still normal if you're not normal?
Four to Five, just one district up, you'd think they'd teach this sort of thing, but Axel just stood there staring until finally the girl glumly asked if he was going to buy something and then he did because he was panicking and the conductor was calling in arrivals and showing up empty handed was suddenly the worst idea ever.
The girl asked if he wanted it wrapped, it'd be extra, but he really should because the shells are fragile (even though they've survived the waves and the sand), but he really should because the paint doesn't do well in the sea-air (even though they've been lying out all day and probably the day before that and the day before that), really though it's a good idea, a good investment-
He got it wrapped.
In the station, he rocks on the balls of his feet, early-life growth spurt forcing his head up above the crowd. He's oh-so careful with the little newspaper-wrapped package in his hands because he absolutely cannot drop it. The only thing worse than showing up with no gift is showing up with a broken gift.
He's got cotton candy pink in his mind's eye, there aren't even that many people at the station, not when it isn't peak Games season, but it's still virtually impossible for Axel to find who he's looking for. He instantly wishes that he had one of those portable phones instead of just the one in Annie's house. It could be ringing right now, Wolf could be on the other end trying to reach him and let him know something came up its not your fault don't worry but I can't make it-
The initial call had been so short that Axel's still not 100% sure he didn't make it up, he was so surprised that Wolfgang was coming to Four. Maybe he just hallucinated it - he's been spending too much time with Pietro probably.
Speaking of - he's got a gig coming up with some Capitol pharmaceutical company that wants to shoot an ad about the dangers of smoking and Axel's been trying to keep it from Pietro, been trying to come up with an excuse for leaving for a week and then coming back and throwing out every tv screen Pietro could possibly ever have access to.
He likes that Pietro thinks he's cool, he doesn't want to change that.
But for the past year and a half he hasn't felt like he quite fit anyways. It's the little things. Auditory hallucinations would just be the cherry on top.
