SHADOW MANTIS - dars

Only the Capitol scientists who made them will ever know where these small-but-terrifying creatures go during the day- there are even tall tales that the creatures cannot survive in sunlight, ad that the dawn of each day is the only thing that could save a person from a swarm. They are mantis-based, but with a stone-hard glossy black shell surrounding them like battle armor and protecting their many glowing red eyes. But it isn't where they go in the day a person should worry about. They attack at night- clouds of shadow emerging from the darkness and leaving nothing behind but bone and the faint sound of chittering in the distance.

COPY CATS - dars

For the most part, these creatures appear to be ordinary black house cats, with the cute eyes and the toe beans and the swishy tail and everything. The only difference is that they are, on average, two and a half feet taller than normal house cats, and they have two mouth-tentacle hybrids coming off the backs of their necks. They were designed to appear nonthreatening to other potential predators, but the extensions on their necks allow them to mimic the attack strategies of other predators, and ultimately turn the situation around on its head.

BALEELS - ✌ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

Balleels are genetically modified eels crossed with a common cave bat to communicate through song. Not the Capitol's finest ideas, but one none the less, the balleel was a hit amongst the wealthy. People would even host concerts for their singing eels back during the 60th era and they were highly popular until it was discovered that the eel's song was just the right pitch to cause extreme euphoria in the listener. People were so infatuated that they would try to go to the source of the sound instead of stay away from it. Sailors would jump overboard, party goers would climb into the eel's tanks. Soon enough, these eels were pulled from homes and fished to extinction. During the early 90's, a young mutt geneticist decided to relook at the balleels for use in the arena. Modified further, their skin became silken in appearance and their movement in the water became as hypnotic as their siren song. Spliced yet again, this time with the genes of a shark to give them rows of sharp teeth and a taste for blood, they're the deadliest thing in water.

DELIVERY WORD

The docile and loyal Delivery Words (commonly called 'Words') are extremely adaptable and capable of crossing lands and bodies of water to deliver mail for the cost of a couple sunflower seeds. Delivery Words usually prefer to fly away from combat. Their meat is highly delicious and packed with essential vitamins. It is not hard to spot a Delivery Word, with their black feathers, gray-specked eyes, and tendency to honk loudly; however, Words can be hard to capture with its ability to withstand high acidity.

CAVE SPIDERS

Originally designed to seek out rebels hiding in caves or underground holes, Cave Spiders are about the size of a small cat and difficult to spot in the dark. It’s probably for the best - their size accentuates every gruesome detail of their appearance, from their many glittering eyes to bodies that look as if they’ve been carved from stone. Because they were mostly used for observation during the war, Cave Spiders aren’t particularly good at defending themselves, though once provoked they have the ability to do a decent amount of damage.

KODAMA

If one did not know better, they would think the Kodoma a ghost. The creature moves in absolute silence, with a body that looks somewhat similar to a human's in that it stands upright and have two arms and two legs. The similarities stop there, though, for this particular mutt has a wide, round abdomen, no fingers or toes, and an oval head with two dark eyes and an equally dark mouth, so that the three features can barely be distinguished from each other. The rest of its body is opalescent, smooth, and free of even the slightest feature, and it's tiny, maybe a foot and a half tall at most. The Kodama are generally a puzzling creature. Unlike most mutts, they were created to cheer up people in the Capitol who were old, sick, or depressed, meant to be a kind of therapy. Their behavior didn't exactly go as planned, though - the creatures would often just stand there, making an occasional call that sounded high pitched and distant. They amused patients, however, and were therefore kept. In the Arena, they have been known to be actually helpful. They travel in packs and often do little more than watch tributes with their wide eyes and bring them food. Still, their presence has been known to be greatly calming to many, even the unlucky teenagers slated for almost certain death.

GOLDBATS

These mutts were created with a certain gamemaker with a taste of the finer things and the scarier things in life in mind. They're easily half the size of an adult human, with a wingspan so wide their arms and wings drag at their feet when they walk, which is not often. Their scales are armored- made completely of gold, making it considerably harder to kill them. Ultimately, the goldbats kill by draining their victims of blood. But their typical targets are small rodents, they only hunt at night, and they are actually quite afraid of humans, making them noticeably fickle when fighting against them.

HELLHOUNDS

Though they’re called hounds, these nasty little creations aren’t just canine. They were created for one purpose- to shred- and the jaws are all alligator, with sharp teeth and the muscles to slam their jaws closed on a piece of prey and toss it around until enough pieces fly off to kill it. The name did come from somewhere, though, and the majority of this mutt is in fact canine in origin. The creature looks like a monstrous wolf- strong fighter, enduring runner, and so dark an earthy green as to appear black. Just to add to the disturbing color factors, the eyes are more vein than sclera, turning them red. (That, like the green tinge to their fur, was actually a defect caused by trying to use such specialized alligator cells; it was originally going to be bred out, but enticed such fear in the Hounds’ prey that it quickly came to be regarded as useful.) The ears are long at birth and need to be cropped to keep from flopping dangerously close to the teeth; that trait is from the bloodhound genetics that allow the Hounds to track their prey even when it seems impossible to do so.

TERRORTOTS

Little girls and boys love their toys- so so very much. Until they get broken, lost, destroyed by unfortunate circumstances. Created as a fun and upcoming childs toy, these creepy colls were originally just robotic dolls that could come alive to play with their owners. The size of a toddler, these toys were a hit with the kids- that is, until they got broken and abandoned by their owners. It was almost as if something in the dolls’ AI switched- they became violent when they were forgotten, stealing knives for weapons to attack somewhat unsuspecting families who had already replaced Miss Sally with another doll just like her! After one too many mutilations occured due to the violent dolls, they were recalled. Left to rot and decay in an empty warehouse- that is, until, the Gamemakers thought they could be put to use. Most of these dolls are a far cry from their original looks- many have half melted faces, some have lost the lower half of their jaw, leaving them gaping and wide eyed and some have no eyes, hair torn from their scalp and mutilated hands where children younger than 3 chewed at them- oh and they have a tendency to carry knives….not that the Gamemakers risked trying to pry the weapons from their plastic, mottled fingers.

HELLCATS

Though the name "Hellcat" was an attempt by the creating scientists to pull from the wild popularity of their canine counterparts, this feline certainly does look like a beast straight out of hell. With DNA borrowed from tigers, lions, and the extinct saber-toothed cats, this felie has a luxurious orange coat with black-maned males. Bred for aesthetic reasons as well as for the agility that their hound counterparts lack, Hellcats have eyes that span from amber to flame in color, ringed by a dark circle of black, as well as eight-inch fangs that protrude from their mouths at all times. These cats are excellent climbers and battle strategists; additionally, they have a great sense of smell, though not to the degree of the hound version.
