Once I finished with Delilah’s crown, I followed the river some more. Something about the blood flowing, running away from me was enticing, hallucinating, encapsulating. There was a sense inside me that was yearning to control the waves. A whisper, a lingering inside of me tingled at the thought of blood. This inner being, like a prisoner breaking off its chain, wanted to be the crevices of the river. It wanted to become a glacial force that carved out where the blood would go. A light desire fluttered to scratch, paw at it, but I couldn’t imagine those thoughts were sane. Shaking those thoughts, I soon faced the cave entrance as the night came to overlook the arena. Not that the arena felt any darker.
It was the best spot for now, as I was starting to get exhausted from today's events. Entering the arena, having to run away from the bloodbath. Maybe the serum is having its effect on me finally. Does it monitor our sleep, turning out nightmares or dreams into opponents? If it did, there weren’t many options in my dreams last night. From the occasional howl whistled in the background of the caves to the eerie feeling that anyone - anything can be watching me. Add on the fact that the moon felt brighter than usual, it was impossible to sleep.
When I did sleep, I slept of aches. Pains. It felt like something was arising inside of me. As if a psychologist’s dream was to get a look into my own. I dreamt of dogs. A pack of wolves and the straggler behind. Was I the straggler as a solo tribute? Was the pack that group of tributes that started attacking me? In my sleep, my nose twitched, and my teeth bared at the thought. I couldn’t let them defeat me.
I woke up to patches of hair. Lots of it. It felt warm, despite the cool air that filtered the cave last night. Looking at my body, it wasn’t just patched; it was an entire coat. Now, as a growing boy, I was used to hair. But I did not inherit a wolverine gene. Thoughts raced through my mind at the layer of fur. Was this what the serum was for? To try and turn us into animals?
Is it permanent? If someone were to return home from the Games, do they need to get declawed? What if I get home? Do I have to worry about Scoops not liking me? Would I have a new scent that creates a threat to the animalistic hierarchy in the household?
Part of me never wanted to find out. The thought of losing Scoops was worse than dying.
My nose perked up much more frequently. I felt like those dogs at the family picnics that would just sniff the air in bliss. The only difference was the smell wasn’t good. It was mildew, mold, blood, and sweat. The occasional earthy tone as a cave has also held firm. Something’s approaching, according to the scent of furry legs getting stronger and stronger. I felt my hands tighten, which led to a quick reminder that I have claws now as the sharper nails grazed my skin. Note to self, don’t do that too hard, or I’ll lose the entire damn hand.
I knew this was the beginning of the next few days of fighting. Part of me wanted to run, hide. Spiders from a cave are not anything to fuck around with. But I’m a wolf now, apparently, and wolves don’t bow down to their killer.
This one doesn’t at least.
I saw a spider racing down the cavern, and I didn’t even give it a second glance. All I did was swipe at it. I was not going to join the scattered piles of rotting bones.
