The aftermath of the spider swarm leaves me feeling empty. It wasn’t enough. It wasn’t a real hunt. There was hardly any meat on those things. Not like what I actually had for dinner. I tear another chunk off of the steak with my teeth. It doesn’t taste right. It’s overdone. It’s not dripping like it should be. Leathery, tough, like an old boot. But it’ll do for now. At least until I find something more—fresh.
Jack gave me one of her antivenoms; something she’d picked up from the wealth. It was easy. One jab and done. Pity, I had a whole system worked out for aftercare. My eyes slide away from my dinner and over to my packmates.
Allies. I mean my allies.
Damn, what the fuck? Starting to piss me off. Words in my head I ain’t putting there. One of them takes a step closer to me and I growl out of reflex. It’s my meat dammit. That feeling dissipates almost as soon as it comes. I’m bigger than I was before. Not by much, but enough to be noticeable. I’m guessing the rest of our competitors got an upgrade too.
“Rest up,” I say to the others. “We have a real hunt ahead of us.” The many blades of my sword click together as I hit the button, showing me the change in my eyes in the reflection once again.
There’s something feral in them. Animal. I get the memo. Capitol wants us to be violent. Ain’t much of a creature feature without something shockingly bloody happening to someone.
“There weren’t any cannons today. Means tomorrow will be time to cull the herd.”
