caelum k. scott
luminary of the stars!
luminary of the stars!
"Open! the damn! door!"
She'd always been a pathetic, cowardly wimp, but Caelum didn't have the patience for it today—even if tears did make him uncomfortable. Though he didn't think anyone had ever gotten that memo. He was the great luminary of the stars after all. He'd never met a crying child he couldn't console, so what was so different about helping Madison?
"Sad Mads?" A sniffle. "Mad Mads?"
"Fuck off, fucking virgin."
"You don't have to be such a-"
He wanted to say, 'bitch' so badly. Breathe.
They were all hurting. He wasn't being fair. He sighs.
"You don't have to be so defensive."
He leans against the door. Breathe. Deep and full and big as a balloon in the hopes that he could float into space. Maybe then his lungs would work well enough for that fancypants exchange space program.
"Anymore. I'm done being angry."
"Some man you are. Giving in so easily."
Caelum chuckles. The door shakes as a fit of coughing takes over. Madison laughs with him; he can feel it.
"Yeah. Lamest shit ever, right?"
And then the world breathes.
"I miss him."
"Yeah," he swallows his anger, he swallows his pain. He doesn't want Madison to hear it in his voice. "Me too."
He waits a few beats.
"So, you uh, build some psycho gadget for him?"
The locking mechanisms on the door begin to click and slide and beep until finally the doorknob turns. Madison peeks through a crack in the doorway, handing him what looks like a metal rod before shutting the door again, locks clicking back into place.
"It's a flower. Solar-powered. Opens with the sun."
"At dawn."
"Yeah. Now leave."
Breathe. Just breathe.
The sun has always been a star. More of a luminary than he would ever become himself. That silly robot kid had always been right. Impossible not to smile at the memory of him; chuckles to himself.
"Let hope guide you."
