There was always dirt on my face.
Ma hated it, but Pa always carried a handkerchief in his pocket.
There was always soot in my hair.
Ma used to groan about it, but Pa laughs about it, and not that laughter that just shook your shoulders, but the type of laughter that made your whole body shake.
"Lucas, you've got to stop encouraging this," Ma would mutter, as she tries to rub the dirt from my face.
"Its just some dirt, Lucy," he would respond, kissing her on the cheek. "It aint gonna kill her."
These day, when Ma would scold me about the dirt I would grin at her, ducking out of reach, "its just a little dirt Lucy- it aint gonna kill me!"
"Kendra! I am your mother! Don't call me Lucy," she would groan, shaking her head with her hands on her hips. A moment later she would be fighting back a smile as she rolls her eyes, "you are just like your father."
