Oh no. Oh no, what time is it - 10:46?! This is SO unfair, I didn't even know I fell asleep. One minute I'm solving for X and carrying the 9 and next I know I'm head down in a puddle of drool with my hair sticking to my face. I woke up so hard I got a cramp in my neck, I don't even remember what I was dreaming of. I started rubbing my eyes a minute ago but it felt so good I just kept going, now the whole room's going black!

Okay, so I have... 14 minutes to finish this whole test. I start flipping through it and I still have like, 40 questions left. Uh oh, okay don't panic Kitty, think! For a second I consider going down my scantron and just filling in all C's, I always heard that you were guaranteed a 50% if you did that and right now that's looking like my best option. I'm so going to fail.

No, there's got to be a better way. I'd cheat off the guy next to me, but honestly I think I'd be better off just guessing. I look behind me and jackpot - Eryn Manor! That girl's a genius, that might just be my ticket to saving my A's & B's.

I tear off a square of my scratch sheet and write in big letters, "HELP!! LET ME CHEAT OFF YOU!" before sliding it to the desk behind me.

Eryn keeps her face stuck to her test booklet, trying not to pay any mind to Kitty Sparks' clearly resting ahead in front of her. Does she know that she snores in her sleep? She flips to the next page. Graphs, charts, equations, inputs, and outputs line up from top to bottom. Teachers force them to abide by the rule of one-inch margins, but when the time comes for testing day, not a single drop of space can be wasted. According to her calculator, Eryn draws lines as they fit on the grid, careful to ensure that every symbol is marked just right and every label is met.

She barely notices the torn piece of paper whisked back toward her desk. She finishes the next problem and leans her calculator up, sliding the paper in front of the digits. HELP!! LET ME CHEAT OFF YOU!" She can hear Kitty's voice emanate from the handwriting. She's always been a little reckless in her approach to academics. Getting sidetracked and using… unconventional methods to get the best grades possible seems to be her speed. Eryn lets out a chuckle, thankful that they're in the back corner of the classroom where no one can see.

She flips the shred of paper to its backside to make a reply to the note. You're in front of me. You can't see my paper. Even if Kitty wanted to, there is no way she could use Eryn as her cheat sheet. But time is ticking; the clock strikes 10:47. Her test is nearly finished with the exception of a few multiple-choice questions that she was too lazy to math her way through in the beginning of the test.

Perhaps if Kitty is open to more unconventional methods of sharing answers, they could make it work. Eryn flicks the sheet of paper off her desk and into the arm of Kitty's, with an extra tap just to make sure she gets a message.

Sure, she can cheat. If she's smart enough to piece together how.

﹂ Well, I made the mistake of trying to try to figure this test out and now my brain hurts. What in the world is a radical? This test is what's not radical! I've never been great at geography, all the formulas just blur together and I just get stuck wondering when I'll ever need to find the radius of a circle. Like, how many circles am I really going to run into in my day to day life? I even studied for this, if only I snuck my flash cards in with me I'd totally be acing this.

Oh my god, my mom's going to ground me when she sees the grade I make on this thing. I'm frantically bouncing my leg and tapping my pencil on the table while I get lost in this one problem by the time Eryn writes back. Well, at first I thought part of the ceiling fell on me but it was actually just the note she flicked back my direction, getting caught in the end of my hair. BOO-YAH, Eryn to save the day for real!

Imagine my horror when she points out the obvious, my gut sinks to my butt and the clock's already at 10:51. Shoot, think, Kitty, think! What would Petelia do...

DUH! I'll just slide her my scantron, and then she can bubble everything in for me and everyone walks away happy. Right, good thinking, so I discreetly lean back and slip my answer sheet onto her desk, trying to sneak a nod of understanding in there. She gets the drill, she's a smart cookie-

"UH, uh," taking my test?? I try to bury my face into the packet, but I can hear Mr. Gorovich's dress shoes getting closer and closer. So there I am, hiding in plain sight with drool all over my desk when he comes and picks up the note between Eryn and I. I'M GOING TO CRY my heart's beating so fast I feel like I just drank three soda's.

"Hand over your tests," NOOO! That's it, I'm dead, my mom's so going to kill me when she hears this. I'm on the verge of losing it all when I finally look up and see him right over me, "ple- please don't call my mom!!" Should I blame Eryn?? Ugh no, he already saw the note, I'm so done for.

Eryn's face falls white as Kitty Sparks begins to bend backward, answer sheet in hand. The piece of paper dangles as it leans toward her, wilting like the flowers she once plucked from the gardens behind her house. What the fuck does she think she's doing? Eryn had already started gently tapping her pen and the leg of Kitty's chair in front of her: one time for A, two times for B, and three for C, but Kitty chose the less discrete and more dangerous option.

The one that is caught immediately, as well. Mr. Gorovich, their math teacher, clocks the situation immediately, and Kitty does a horrible job of hiding it. He demands that Eryn hand her test to him. He takes the scrap of paper that Kitty initially passed back to her as well. She crosses her arms, paper in hand, obliging to Gorovich's request to hand them over. "Technically, I didn't cheat, Mr. Gorovich. I told Kitty that I couldn't, even if I wanted to. She's banking on her past academic integrity to push her through the half-truth that justifies her decisions. "And I don't want to."

Eryn looks right toward him with innocent yet frustrated eyes. He's calculating the probability of her honesty in real-time. Mr. Gorovich stumbles on a response. "I suppose that may be true. And technically, Kitty didn't cheat, although she attempted to by the looks of this note." Ah, yes. The technicality saves her. Eryn doesn't know if her father or Hunter would be upset if she was caught cheating, anyway. They hold her too close to be comfortable risking letting her go.

"Kitty Sparks, I'm going to have to ask you to stay after school and take Version C of the test. And please, clean up that drool from your desk."

Version C. Of course, Eryn knew that in all likelihood, Versions A and B were passed out like a checkerboard so no one adjacent to her would have the same test. Cheating likely wouldn't have worked out anyway. She hurries to the final few responses she needs to make before the end of the period. 10:55.
