I said I'd be back for you, she reaffirms to herself, trying to slip into her defenses again. It'd been a week since the initial attack, but Josefa still sees the shadows, lurking, watching, anticipating. With wet lips and an empty belly - it doesn't matter what it is, she's putting it into the fucking ground. Her blood still boils with the fury of fright that came with seeing her herd slaughtered overnight.
And Josefa, she knows no quitting.
Her last three goats lay docile in their stable, lifeless, almost frozen in the way they slumber. Easy prey, one of them hasn't even grown horns. That's okay, it's all alright, Josefa's got something to protect all of them: a motherfucking rifle. Resting in her lap, the barrel kissing her kneecap and her fingers embracing the sweet, cold steel of its handle and trigger. She brought out a chair and a thermos of water, and a few extra shells just in case, and she waited.
Oh so patiently. Rubi sits by her side, an older lass of a dog meant to sniff out danger a mile away. That's her cohort for the night, the ears to her eyes, one bark and that's the sign to raise her gun - seek and destroy.
When it comes, she doesn't hesitate. Josefa rises from her chair as slowly as Rubi's low growls come, breaking her enjoyment of watching the stars above. Danger comes, she looks between her dog and the forest line an acre off, trying to pin point the shadow before raising the scope of her ruger up to her eye. There's no clear shot, but she sees the rustling of leaves, movement of another kind.
And she takes no risks.[ josefa shoots her rifle ]

Josefa catches one glimpse of the beast and scrambles for the trigger - it's massive. Bulky, four legs, but for a second it registers as something humanoid. What the fuck is that? is the only question in her mind before she shoots, and she recoils underneath the horrendous howl of pain that follows. It dashes somewhere off into the forest, and she hesitates to run after it. Instead, she lets it get away, somewhat out of fear of facing it at any closer range.
Just leave us alone.
