Declan.
” to pharmacy manufacturers.”
For weeks Declan has felt hundreds of eyes on him. The Profoundling trials are failing quicker than they have before, despite the rise in Garaplin consumption through his manufacturing unit his true love child is not picking up. The well-known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory combined drug was used in the battle against the plague, it did not cure it but the symptoms eased slightly. Though Declan didn’t care, his bank account was reaping in the benefits, and he was earning enough on his approved drug that he can spend it on the super-human Profoundling experiment.
But the bodies keep piling high.
He blames his workers for picking the wrong test subjects. He blames the plague for infecting his test subjects. He even blames Johnny Scaletta, the kid that he pays to discard the bodies. There is no reason to blame him, but he just blames him. But it is not just a failing study that the old man needs to worry about now.
There is just a feeling that his so called illegal experiment is secretly being investigated. Peacekeeper patrols are more frequent on the factory’s street and there seems to be accidental visits by those trying to find other pharmacy manufacturers and now this whole Mayor Cham scenario. Declan is going to have to pull some strings to get a registration license, hopefully pulling the victor relative card to help him skip through the hoops.
Like everyday of the past decade, Declan is in the lab. Hooking up the administration machine with his three other lab staff to their next test subject. The dose is tweaked slightly, and some sodium has been mixed in, hopes are low but it will add to the thousands of rows of data in the already overloaded database on this study.
”Mr Garner, your grandchildren are here.” His personal assistant’s voice echoes over the intercom and it rocks Declan to the core. A very select few people know about his studies and none of them are in his family, the unannounced arrival is not a welcome one. ”Pause for a moment, I will send them on their way.” Declan says to the lab assistants as he pulls off his gloves, heading through the secret door of the laboratory at the back of his medicine manufacturing factory.
The grandchildren are Benen’s kids, the three of them wandering around the factory like it is a playground. Trying to work undercover within the shadow of his victor grandchild has been a challenge but he has managed the past five years.
”Happy birthday!” They say, Flynn is the one carrying a box. Probably the same muffins they all baked last year that Declan handed out to his staff, claiming that he baked them himself. He had forgotten that it was his birthday, he doesn’t like being reminded that his years are growing shorter by the minute. His time will come when his trial will be a success.
”Mr Garner, there have been reports of illegal activity within this facility and we have a warrant to search the building.” The next unannounced arrival is not notified by his personal assistant at the front desk. A whole regiment of peacekeepers with their batons drawn and their dirty noses in Declan’s business. ”Go ahead, I have nothing to hide. Though you have intruded on my birthday celebrations.” Declan says as he takes the box of muffins from Flynn, still standing in front of the plain red door disguised as a broom cupboard.
There are no words from the peacekeepers as they spend the next twenty minutes overturning tables and shutting off machines on the factory lines. All the staff within the factory line are lined up, likely interrogated to find the answers that hide behind the door that Declan still stands in front of with his grandchildren.
”You are making a mess of my property, where do I claim on the damages?” Declan asks, shoving the box of muffins into Dorothy’s hands this time.
”It depends what we find, Mr Garner. What is behind that red door?” The lead peacekeeper says as he moves closer to the eighty-year old scientist, two other peacekeepers march alongside him.
”It is just a cleaning cupboard, my friend cleans in here and he comes in and out of the cupboard all the time. I can vouch for my grandpa.” Flynn finally drops a few words of support but the kid’s influence is not enough. The peacekeeper demands to access the room.
Then this is where Declan’s entire existence expires. It all happens so quickly that the old man can’t keep up. His own grandchildren step into the lab behind the peacekeepers before he does. Flynn is quick to run to the test subject. The lab staff are quick to defend themselves and this is where the standoff begins.
The lab staff, Pietro and Elon have a hold of Nessa and Dorothy, needles of Profoundling held against their forearms. Their reaction so drastic that this could have easily been talked out of. Except they are trying to save their skin. Flynn is screaming, begging them to drop the needles while the peacekeepers are an unorganized mess with their weapons drawn. Declan is calm, running his hand across the table, picking up his own needle and grabbing the shoulder of his grandson. ”Forget what you have seen here or I inject the victor. You don’t know what is in this injection. You don’t know what effects it causes. You do not need to know. You can leave and all of this can be forgotten.”
