Prof. Cassias Navarro”I will only be thirty minutes.”
Juggling breaktimes between an overwhelmed and understaffed department is a challenge. Most days Cass skips meals, forgets to drink and sometimes must drop by the internal medicine department as he has not visited the bathroom once during his twelve-hour shift. A rare hour has occurred where there have been no new admissions and most patients are stabilized. Cass has devised a relay of breaks between his team so that there are enough feet on the shop floor in case a vitals machine sounds its alarms. Most beds are filled with rose plague victims. There was quite an excitement earlier in the day when Cass clerked a new admission with a whole list of symptoms that he has not seen in a while. A double pneumonia whose chest x-ray has the worst lung presentation he has ever seen. Something different for a change, he needs a sandwich before he tells the patient that they will have to be intubated…
Doffing every layer of protective equipment takes a great chunk out of his thirty minutes. Down to just his dark blue scrubs and a simple facial mask as he steps out of the airtight sealed doors that slam shut hard behind him. The Infectious Diseases department is the furthest away from the staff canteen, it will have to be a sprint back from his break. Hopefully there is not a queue.
There is a queue. A long one. Entire departments are stood with trays in front of him. Nice to see surgery is quiet...
The exhausted man whose darkened eyes are clear as the day despite the precautionary mask that he wears sighs as the usually fully stocked refrigerator of cold sandwiches is empty. The only other option is a hot meal served by the catering staff, and he will have to queue for that…
Another colleague in the queue behind him looks just as disappointed as he is, Dr Garner, the head of Internal Medicine. An unexpected counterpart now that Cass is interim head of Infectious Diseases. ”I thought Fenwick had pumped a whole lot of dollars into this hospital? Even the fruit bowl looks empty…” Cass says as he picks up a tray from the stack, settling for the hot meal option as the queue moves along. ”How is your patch doing today, Garner? We have beds in a corridor…”
