Sometimes when Maci closes her eyes, she imagines herself swimming to the furthest point of the oceans, but each time she opens them, a world of harsh realities comes crashing down around her like a wave breaking before slamming into the sandy shore. This isn't new to her, though, and it serves as a constant reminder that she'll never find a way to escape the grasps her family has on her. It isn't as bad as it seems, yet Maci yearns to explore the world. When she was young, she attempted to run away only to be found by her parents not even twenty minutes later. She wasn't allowed to swim for a month, and that broke her.

The water is her home. It's where she feels alive. Getting close to the sea creatures and watching them swim so freely without a care in the world brings her a sense of joy Maci is unable to describe. All she wants is to become one of them so she can live freely without a care in the world. Only it's impossible.

It doesn't stop her from freeing fish from fishing lines, or cutting fishing nets so fish can escape the grasps those fishing have upon them. It takes a lot of work, not getting caught. Even though she's from district four, Maci refuses to eat seafood since she considers them her friends. After all, they are her only friends since most people she knows thinks she's weird, and they never take her to the ocean for a fishing trip since she'll try to free all the sea animals anyway.
